Guys Rohal was the genius who first came up with the idea of coke studio it was his experimental project for which he used coke to widen its range/reach..the whole purpose of creating it as he mentioned in first season was to take live performances to the masses cuz there weren't any concerts happening in Pakistan back than due to the terrorism wave which was at its peak back then ..through out his tenor he experimented differently ..he didn't repeat any experiment twice ..he did 6 seasons and every season was unique/entirely different from the rest..i remember he used to say.."Our worst enemy is our last show." so he would always come up with different approaches every season and that's what everyone loved about it. His experiment ended in season 6 and this was the opening song of his last and final season..No one has heard from him after that..he gifted the world with coke studio..guy was a pure genius.

Coke Studio 6 was actually an experiment, where international artists were involved and different parts were recorded in different studios. And it actually was met with a lot of criticism back then from people who preferred the good ole live jam sessions in the studio. Little did they know what was to come 5 seasons later... Woh sab aaj tauba kar rahe honge 😂

Regarding this song though, I understand where you're coming from with the instruments, but it doesn't really bother me. Would I have preferred instruments a little more desi? Sure, but this was interesting regardless. The words and the melody itself is beautiful. And the minimalism with the rustic vocals of Saieen Zahoor and Sanam Marvi's soulful rendition lulls me into a trance.
Also Ashu, you may prefer more variations in singing styles which is fair, but folk music ka maza hi simplicity mei hai! Jo regional folk singers hotay hain, woh aksar zyada technique and singing style and "vocals" pe itna focus nahi karte. Unka purpose kuch convey karna hota hai. And jis soul se aur jis sachai se woh convey kartay hain, seedha hit kar jata hai. This is why I love Saieen Zahoor. His voice quality and the way he expresses himself never fails to tug at my heartstrings.

Regarding Ashu's comment that Had Saeen Zhoor sung same line in different notes it would have enhanced the performance. Saeen Ji is not a professionally trained singer. He spent big part of his life at different shrines singing sufi kalams with that instrument (toomba) and nothing. The biggest attraction for masses was his raw voice. Also I saw in one of the interviews that he cant even read, someone else recites the lines to him.. He draws different shapes by listening to it and then memorise it by looking at those pictures he drew.

Also there was a comment that music wasnt synchronised with the song. Rohail experimented quite a bit and he had whole research or experiences behind it. Whenever you have time please watch his talk at Harvard (available on youtube) where he spoke at length about creating CS and he actually mentioned that some people may find it odd and the same time some will find it okay even if its flat, it depends what sound your ears are tuned to:)

In season 6 rohail did a lot of experimentation so the pakistani vocalist recorded their vocals separately and the musicians from the different countries separately. But it was still done in one take.

Same with season 5. A lot of the times the music was added later but the vocals were recorded in one take without a live band as they are in season 6
