The 3 steps of Web App Development

1. Sketch out the UI.
2. Design the database
3. Write your business object code ... pick your programming language: PHP, Python, Java, JavaScript, C# ... and even Ruby!

This is 100% spot on, and it's where I've been going wrong. I'd always start with the objects/database (because that's what made sense in my mind), then find the data I'm feeding to the UI needs to be transformed this way and that to accommodate what I actually want the users to see.

I was doing use case diagrams instead of UI designs for the first step, but I think it's simpler for the client to have UI designs.
