West End Catalina ~ BANDING DAY!~ Removal & Return Of The Eaglets! 5.4.19

Dr. Peter Sharpe from the IWS Institute for Wildlife Studies, hiked up to the West End nest today and removed the eaglets for banding. After removing the triplets, he carried them to just below the nest where they were measured for gender including beak depth and hallux toe measurements and a general health check. An orange band was placed on the right leg of the male; an orange band was placed on the left leg of the females. And a silver ID band is also placed on the opposite leg of each. We have two females and a male!!

Dr Sharpe then returns the eaglets to the nest carefully and takes a picture of them for documentation. Thank you Dr Sharpe and team for your excellent work! Thank you for watching!

Always impressive to watch their work. Loved the simultaneous posturing of the females! Thanks for the video Lady Hawk.

So much amazing stuff going on during this - the little one was giving Dr. Sharpe the stare down and then I just loved the simultaneous mantling reaction of the two older females when their little brother was removed from the nest, far as I know that was the first time they have mantled, an instinctive reaction to danger - hard to hear Thunder and Superman in such distress and I can't even imagine what they were thinking seeing a human sitting in the middle of the nest putting their babies in bags, but it all ended well and both parents returned to the nest soon afterwards. :)

Thanks Dr. Sharpe and thanks to Lady Hawk for sharing this. The eaglets sensed he meant no harm, but the parents flying above weren't convinced. I don't know how high the nest is, or if Dr. Sharpe was secured with rope.
He's a great climber and handles the eaglets so well. - Stephanie

Just awesome Lady Hawk! Dr. Sharpe always impresses me with how he handles them. I noticed the boy, the first taken didn't want to go😄. I think Thunder(K-91) handled the whole thing quite well and I'm sure she was thinking something along the lines of "every year these humans come mess with my kids!" lol. The motions the two girls did simultaneously after Dr. Sharpe grabbed their brother were very cool to see at this angle. He does a very professional return of them to the nest and did a nice job rearranging the sticks. I noted after banding it was around an hour or so when Superman returned to the nest first but both parents were on the tor watching after they were returned. Thanks for all the great coverage LH💜

They get out of the bag and just sit there looking violated lol

That last one was sitting over there thinking, if I sit very still that earthling want see me and try and take me. When he let them back out, apparently the big girl on 5he right was the spokes person for the eaglets. She was letting him know what she thought of him and his adventure he took them on. They always look so violated and humiliated when they come out of those bags. I’m sure they are just feeling discombobulated. 😂🤣

Grateful for the opportunity to watch not only these eagles, bit follow several other nests. Grateful for those that care for them, and do so with every ounce of love in their bodies and intellect. And grateful to you, LH, for giving us to see clips of what happens at nests all across the country, for we are not always watching live! You give us these moments!

Thank you for the video! I thought there would be 3 females but I was close. Glad it went well. They are so patient with the Eaglets and caring.
