Welcome to 'History In 60'! Today, we’re delving into the brutal witch hunts of Europe, which were far more extensive and deadly than the infamous Salem Witch Trials. Let’s uncover this darker chapter in history! When we think of witch trials, Salem often comes to mind. But Europe experienced a series of witch hunts that were more widespread and deadly. Between the 15th and 18th centuries, tens of thousands of people, mostly women, were executed across Europe on charges of witchcraft. Germany was particularly notorious for its witch trials. In the town of Würzburg, over 900 people were executed in the early 1600s. Entire families, including children, were accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake. Neighboring Bamberg saw a similar fate, with hundreds of executions. The European witch hunts remain one of history’s darkest periods.
