C17 Lands at small commuter airport by accident

This C-17 landed at the small commuter airport (TPF - Peter O'Knight airport) just south of downtown on Davis Islands, in Tampa instead of Mac Dill AFB.

Take a look at the two airports on on Google maps.The runways are lined up closely enough that this is not the first time that a military "heavy", has set up for final approach from the east before an "oh shoot" moment when they realized that there are no private homes along the runway at MacDill AFB, (who's runway is long enough to be designated an alternative for the space shuttle).

When I was shooting news in Tampa, I shot the departure of a Brazilian C-130 who did the same thing.

This ought to be a great story for this pilot's, great, great, grand children!

Also, they backed the tail of the C17 over the water in the channel before takeoff!

You know the C-17 is a very very special plane. The fact it can take off within 2000 feet and land within that range is unique. Especially for its size

I can never get tired of watching this aircraft take off. It's so large, and you think it is going way too slow. And then, it just lifts off like it's an ultra-light.

C-17's are specifically designed just like C-130's to land in austere unforgiving short strips of land so taking off from a 3, 500 ft strip is plenty of space for this versatile beast of an aircraft!

Anyone else remember the feeling sitting inside a C-17 while it shook violently as they raised the RPMs on its powerful motors, staying in one spot, then releasing the brakes? It looks so slow in the video but man it pins you sideways (sitting with back on skin of aircraft). Insane power.
