It's finally here: The Akira 35th Anniversary Box Set from Kodansha!!! I wanted to do something a little more than just unbox this beast. I also compared it to previous versions of Akira released in America by Epic, Dark Horse and the Kodansha trade paperbacks. I hope you viewers enjoy!

You can purchase this wonderful box set here:

I think their reasoning with the sound effects were that they were hand drawn by Otomo, and this printing is trying to preserve Otomo's original work for the collected editions as much as possible. I'd agree though that sound effects should usually be printed in the margins if this is the case, going to the index is a hassle, but for the most part I think the reader can safely assume the sounds based on the action in the panel. You're right though that there are cases where this is not quite applicable.

original sound effects were announced as part of the package. It wasn't due to lack off effort but a conscious decision from Kodansha

Missed out on it last year, but I managed to finally get my box set now. Very happy!

Few reasons why I'm debating getting this box set. First, this is a very nice box set and I just learned recently how even looking at a well presented collection is tempting. Second, I like checking out original source material to shows that I really enjoyed so I can get more out of it. And last, this has an art book in it and I love my art books.

Thank you for the comparison video. I decided to go with the paperback version as I prefer the left to right format and the English sfx. Awesome video!

Sound effects are part of the art. Glad they left it the way they did. Thanks for the video

I would like a full color, original right-to-left, oversized, hardcover box set (with translated sound FX). Also, jealous of your collection.

Never owned or read any manga before but after watching your videos for Akira, Berserk and Alita and loving the Akira and Alita movies I decided to give manga a go and ordered the two Berserk deluxe volumes, the Akira 35th anniversary boxset and the Alita deluxe boxset. Just received the Berserk volumes and Akira boxset today (hopefully Alita won't be far behind) and they are stunning. The Berserk deluxe volumes look so much more expensive than they were and the artwork looks even better close up. The Akira boxset just blew me away. The quality throughout is insane although I do have to admit I thought that the books would be a little heavier than they are (not including the Akira Club book which is pretty heavy). Its a shame that the full colour pages are only in the beginning of each volume because the full book in colour would have been fantastic. I can't wait to read through these and see where the stories go. Thank you Omar as always for the awesome videos.

I don't care about the non-translated sound effects, they're easy enough to understand.

Great video👍 I really appreciated the comparisons to earlier editions. I didn't know the original issues were full color, so that was really cool to see. I've been a fan of the anime since I was a kid and I was lucky enough to get this collection when it first came out. I still haven't opened the box yet because I'm kinda intimidated by the page count, but since the Covid-19 pandemic, I've seriously wanted to start it. Watching this video makes me want to open it right now!

It says that the sound effects are a feature on the description paper. "A revise and updated translation that includes Katsuhiro Otomo's original hand-drawn sound effects, never before seen in an English edition." They probably wanted to deferentiate more from there standard paper backs more than just it's now Hard Cover and Standard Right to Left Japanese Style. I personally prefer the translated sound effects as well, I prefer the Right To Left for Manga unless it was intended to be Left to Right like some older manga, I heard some of Tezuka's stuff wasoriginally Left to Right. But like you said in the video the sound effect's set up some scene's like a robot slowly aapproaching, we here it before we see it, but if it isn't translated the we either guess or wait until we see the context of the scene the mentally add a fitting sound effect, I see it as point less, it's a translation so keep it translated.

Great review, do you know if there might be a color release?for me the perfect set would be like this but color and translations.also what difference does it make mirrored or reading it left to right?i have the large American Kodansha volumes you have with translated sound effects.in your honest opinion, I know the hardbacks a cooler and better quality but what is the better read?
Kodansha with the English sound effects and reading the opposite way or this new release with the correct manga reading way but no English sound effects.i know this is better paper and hardbacks, but minus all that, nice box etc.which is the best read if you had to choose.thank you
