Philosophy of Dreaming 1

The standard view of dreams is that dreams are hallucinatory experiences that occur during sleep. Today I examine two challenges to this view: Dennett's "cassette theory" which holds that dreams are not experiences at all, but rather false narratives composed during sleep and then inserted into our memories on awakening; and Ichikawa's theory that dreams are not hallucinations, but are constructed out of mental imagery.

I’ve always though that I was dissociating when I was driving on highways to work. Now I know it’s possible I’ve been experiencing highway hypnosis. Very interesting.

This looks like a Cartesian argument from illusion. I don't buy the principle that "if you can't distinguish between two cases then you can't know that you are in one case rather than another." Maybe "suspense dreams" give us reason to doubt the standard view, but in general I think we should reject these kinds of "arguments, " otherwise I don't see how we escape general scepticism. We should take memory and experience at face value until we are given reasons to doubt them.

The problem with the cassette theory is that I lucid dream and also have at times, gone from falling asleep into a pure lucid dream state, being aware of my Body and trying to move it, helps me to come back out.

A lot of videos on the history and philosophy of dreaming never talk about Aristotle. Why is that? Aristotle was like on of the first scientists for goodness sake.

Greek philosophers invennted rational thinking and laid the foundations for modern science.
