Crownsville Hospital Documentary

An abandoned mental hospital in my area that I was always curious about, but had difficulty finding any public information on. I couldn't even find a YouTube video of the interior of the buildings, which only added to my curiosity. This video is the result of several visits, several tapes, research and days of editing. All with the risk of entering state property which is absolutely coated with asbestos, patrolled 24/7 and supposedly haunted. I hope that this brings some awareness to the reality of mental health care practices of the not so distant past.

I have never asked in the past, but please like/comment and share this video if you enjoyed it.

Such a great view into a fixture of central Maryland that many just ignore on their "back way" to Annapolis. These buildings contain so many stories of people both misunderstood and intentionally abused.

I didn't know the complete history of the Crownsville Hospital until 2007 when I went to work for the State of Maryland Department of Housing which is next door to the hospital. For several months I would go through what I called the "back way" to work and would drive through the campus streets of the dilapidated hospital not knowing its horrible history for several months. Until one day I asked one of my co-workers who grew up in the area and they told me of this horrifying history of African American mentally ill people in the old days. I am black and was very moved and horrified by what I learned of what happened there through research and word of mouth history. The building still stands today and agency of the State of Maryland is housed in our former department of housing building. I'm told, the state is leaving the hospital buildings intact as it is for a memorial and hollowed ground to the dead who died there. Mournfully, may they Rest in Peace now because their terrible suffering is over with. God Bless.

I work at the Spring Grove psych hospital in Catonsville, and I notice some left behind files, x-rays and basically neglect of patient files, to be honest, we have some of that here at SGHC as well as some of Crownsville's files, from the lack of shredding immediately caught my attention, coming from working in the medical records department

You did such an amazing job putting this together. I love being able to see the hospital without actually having to be there!

Good video of a place that hasn't been vandalized and spray painted to death. These are few and far between.

The middle school I went to was literally right near here, and my grandpa and I would always drive by this place nearly every day. We would always talk about exploring it, but we never did. Thanks for making it possible for us to really see what’s inside!

"...shoes, a jackeet or even a bicycle for their kids." Yes, and just maybe, the homeless with a roof nobody wants to repurpose. It hurts my heart that so many old buildings sit unloved, as so many homeless do every day and night.

From one content creator to another, excellent editing and overall presentation. This is some of the best footage that I've seen of this place and sadly I drive by this location quite often. Keep up the amazing work (Subscribed) Cheers....

I was an RN working at another state run hospital when Crownsville closed. A lot of the patients were transferred from Crownsville to our facility. It’s truly sad to see so many lost souls, nobody visits or calls them. We were their family. I can’t imagine what they’ve suffered, or even if they can remember. Most of them were nonverbal, confused and combative; behaviors prevalent with not only the mentally ill but dementia patients, as well. I really hate to see this big beautiful place to just waste away. I know it would cost a fortune to refurbish, as it has been deserted for many years. I did know about the tribute it represents to especially the blacks, who I’m sure, suffered greatly with every experiment known to man. It would be nice to be able to place the many addicts, veterans, senior citizens and the many children living on the streets across America. They are mostly treated as ‘throw aways’ in our society; and while I understand some of them don’t want to change or get clean or ask for help. I’m emotional when I see so very many. Ok, off the subject some…. I saw many lost ‘souls’ in every building you explored.. standing against the walls, the obvious (2) you pointed out from the beginning but so many more unsettled beings’ and I even heard ‘Get out’ (3)x’s and ‘Die’ several times. This documentary is one of the best I’ve ever seen. I always love going through places and seeing the history all these walls must hold. Thank you so very much, both you and your videographer for an excellent view of the past!

I have to ask and I understand if you don't answer but with 24/7 security how did you get in all those times without being caught especially during the day time?
