They also created their own networking hardware that makes it possible for the chips to all act as one, all of this is all about making it easy to stay in the Nvidia ecosystem and harder to switch to others, even if someone else puts out a chip that for a few months is faster, between cuda and all the backwards compatibility, it's not worth it for companies to switch.

What if someone doesn't need actually a small chip or board to make these kind of calculations, but instead they use cheaper but large scale computers like in the old days to perform the same AI tasks... how can you build a similar system but way way cheaper?
