Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Senate Democrats are holding a press briefing the day after House managers delivered an article of impeachment against Donald Trump to the Senate.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and other Senate Democrats hold a press briefing. Last night, the nine House impeachment managers delivered the article of impeachment against former Pres. Donald Trump to the Senate. The House impeached Trump on January 13 for ‘high crimes and misdemeanors by inciting violence against the government of the United States.’ The article was passed with historic bipartisan support, as 10 Republicans went against Trump and supported impeachment. He is the only president to ever be impeached twice.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the lead House manager, read the entire article of impeachment on the Senate floor last night. ‘Donald John Trump, by such conduct, has demonstrated that he will remain a threat to national security, democracy, and the Constitution if allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with self-governance and the rule of law,’ Raskin said before the Senate. ‘Donald John Trump thus warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust, or profit under the United States.’
Schumer has said the ‘timely and fair trial’ will begin on February 9. On the Senate floor yesterday, Schumer called out Republicans who have suggested that it is unconstitutional to impeach a former president. ‘There seems to be some hope that Republicans could oppose the former president’s impeachment on process grounds, rather than grappling with his actual awful conduct,’ the majority leaders said. ‘The trial is going to happen. It is certainly and clearly constitutional. And if the former president is convicted, there will be a vote to disqualify him from future office.’
