Nikon D600 Hands on Preview

Today in Germany at Photokina I got my hands on a loose Nikon D600 to give it a sniff as well as quick hands on preview.

First thoughts: It feels ok in the hands, a little on the small side but that was to be expected. Other than that the viewfinder looked nice and bright, the two SD card slots are nice, the U1 and U2 are nice and the screen looks to be nice.

But that is all I can comment on at this point as I have not had a chance to shoot the actual camera. More to come on that in the not to distant future.

Was on set today with two D7000s shooting interviews and got my e-mail confirmation that my D600 was in. Picked it up at lunch and replaced one of the D7000s with the D600. Dynamic Range and skin tones were a huge improvement. Layout and size is comparable to the D7000 and I agree it is small in the hands but slap a grip on it and that will help. DXOmark concludes it is right behind the D800/E in sensor performance. Can't wait to go out and shoot some stills with it!

Hey Jared, I'm strongly considering the D600 as an upgrade from my D300s...How would you say the body feels compared to the D300s since you said it's slightly larger than the D7000.

One of the points Nikon made when they announced the D600 was its diminutive body. Its selling points were full frame sensor and portability.

Jared, Could you tell a difference in the viewfinder vs the D7000 and the D3S? Such as was it as bright as the D3s? As small as the D7000?

Are you talking about the D600 viewfinder size? Because the D600 has a 100% viewfinder coverage, not 97%.

I first saw Nikon D600 images leaked back in early June along with a list of spec and an estimated price range of $1500. They were probably on the internet a good month or so before I even saw it. I'm sure it was not hard for Canon to catch wind of it and come up with a competing camera seeing as how both are both upgrades but little brother's of other cameras. I think very little work was involved in developing both, Canon I think waited right after Nikon to see what the price was going to be.

I agree, the difference is properbly negligible for most people in most situations.. But it's still annoying that it limits the ability of the flash to overpower the sun... And I really, really think that its an artificial limitation to distance the camera further from the D800 - to provide more incentive to upgrade..
