Explore the ancient methods of growing glaciers, the homemade bodies of ice used as water sources, and how they can be used to combat climate change.

--

In the 13th century, Genghis Khan embarked on a mission to take over Eurasia, swiftly conquering countries and drawing them into his empire. But, legend has it that there was one obstacle that even he couldn’t overcome: a towering wall of ice, grown by locals across a mountain pass. M Jackson explores the ancient methods of growing glaciers and how they can be used to combat climate change.

Lesson by M Jackson, directed by Artrake Studio.

Thank you Ted Ed, now I finally know how to make my own glacier. The inability to make one has been bothering me for years.

I loved the ‘wild grown glacier’ look verses ‘artificial grown glacier’

The internet is a wonderful place. You were watching memes a minute ago and then learned how to make a glacier the next minute.

I am from baltiyul Pakistan.
We have been growing glaciers from very old ages
There is a myth here that sengge chu [ Indus river] is male and shyok river is female.... Ice from both rivers is placed at very high altitude and the said process is followed... It will take about 10 to 20 years to confirm the success of the glacier
Here in baltiyul many villages had implemented this technique and they were quite successful

It’s so cool to know that ancient techniques are used to this day. And these ancient techniques could provide water in areas with water scarcity. Loved the video. The more you know..

Before people hop in here to give all the credit for the Ladakhi artificial glacier effort to Sonam Wangchuk, I'd like to point out that Chewang Norphel did it first. Look him up, his story is pretty great.
