Fishing with Balloons - Fishing Tip #2

In this fishing tip video, Josh explains the techniques of balloon fishing. Balloons are very effective as: a float, when using either live or dead bait, when you need to drift a bait out (either in wind or a current), visual aid, or when fishing bottom with structure. You want to use bright colored balloons that are biodegradable. The size of the balloon should be in proportion to the size of your bait. Balloon Fisher King balloon clips simplify the technique of attaching a balloon to your line.

Saltwater species to target with balloons include: sharks, billfish, tuna, anything in the mackerel family, tarpon, snook, cobia, permit, redfish, striped bass and much more.

Freshwater species to target with balloons include: muskie, pike, striper, hybrid, largemouth bass, catfish, crappie and much more

Appreciate that. You gave me some new ideas on making my rig a lot easier to set up with those clips, and I didn't know they made biodegradeable balloons. I've always been a bit of a jerk when it came to balloons being loose from the line making everyone go out of their way to retrieve it just so it wasn't littering the water.

Any tips for balloon fishing from a kayak? How should your drag be set when balloon fishing?

Let's say I am in 60 feet And want that balloon half or near the surface or just 10 feet down and you get a good fish in then start reeling in does the balloon come up to the rod tip at the same point you attach it or will it slide around ... If it doesn't slide then at some point in your battle when the balloon gets to the rod you have to hurry and undo it and resume the fight so I was wondering does that give fish the chance to throw a bait ?

It is interesting that you can adjust the depth. I am more familiar with float fishing though baloon seems to have better capacity in catching wind and current. Thanks for video

Now I have to add that balloons are the budget version of kites... You can use it as a bobber but definitely they are not the best! When we had larger bait we use Styrofoam so is one time use! I don't want a bright colored and riped balloon attached to your line with a fish hooked... So the solution... Well a small team of fisherman (back in Cuba early 2000) came with cheap and ingenious idea... That will release the balloons with the hit of a fish...that revolutionize fishing when it was the hard for the shore line fisherman! Just like the kite did in other countries... So now you could put a live bait hundred yards where just boats were able before! Of course with the help of wind like the kite!

Hi Josh. I live and fish in the indian ocean (Madagascar). Wish to use your technique. Does this work for night fishing? If yes how deep must the bite be (distance between bite and ballon/surface ? Sorry for my bad writting (I am French). Look forward reading from you and thank you in advance !

I've never used a ballon to fish, but I have one question. Does a ballon effect the presentation of your live bait? If the ballon has no effect I'll definitely use this for night fishing with live bait.

couldn't you put a fine mesh netting of some sort around the balloon, attaching it under the knot at the bottom, and use it to keep all the balloon pieces in case it pops?
