Inside the Mossad: Ronen Bergman in Conversation with David Sanger

Since the founding of Israel in 1948, the nation has relied on its intelligence community and armed services to defend against those who would do it harm.

And in Rise and Kill First: The Secret History of Israel’s Targeted Assassinations, veteran journalist Ronen Bergman — “arguably Israel’s best investigative reporter,” in the words of David Remnick — pulls back the curtain on the country’s most effective secret weapon. Hear gripping accounts of the dangerous missions undertaken by the Mossad, Shin Bet and the IDF to root out Israel’s enemies before they could attack the Jewish state. And explore the thorny ethical questions that Israeli forces have grappled with as they protected their homeland.

Recorded on January 30th, 2018 at 92nd Street Y.

It's a remarkable book, and an extraordinary achievement of research and investigation.

I'm reading this book and now seeing this interview was even better to understand a lot of what goes on with Israel. I respect and admire that country.

Several crucial times, Israel was left alone. That is a very good lesson to learn. At the end, the onlyone Israel´s allieds are Jewish People world. May Adonai be and remain over His chosen Land and chosen people. Blessed is His Name.

I have just finished the book for the seventh time in about 4 years. It keeps fascinating me. And I learned a thing or two, three from this report. It strengthens my opinion that the Israelis, or Jews if you will, are the most humane and wise creatures on this planet. And I have read Einstein, Velikovsky and Spinoza, to name a few.

People will do whatever is needed to survive. It is wired into our gene structure from time immemorial. The ones that survive will replicate further due to their fit for the environment they must survive in whilst others will be obliterated because they could not cope. I am not an Israeli but I suspect I understand this survival mentality that by and large the whole Israeli society has engendered post WW II. It tends to be a self perpetuating mindset that will further hone their skill in a very narrow set of talents since they exercise them so often with a disproportionate allocation of resources; whether that be time, people, money etc. There is however nothing remarkable to this tendency. Any society, group of people or even an individual can on average develop specialized skills at anything should there be enough allocation of time and effort and repetition. The one thing to observe though is that such a high degree of commitment to any goal does not last in perpetuity. Infact, it fades away when the perceptual or actual need (in this case external threats to Israel) moves more distant in space and time. One can see this phenomena playing itself out in the American Jewry which by and large has been shielded from any anti-semitism and have done rather well economically. The commitment to a survivalist cause within this community is dwindling rapidly and one might argue that over the course of another 50 years, it will be a distant memory unless of course a local or global event transpires to re-jog that zeal. Such are the cycles of human psychology which requires constant prodding in any case. Nevertheless, the interview is interesting as is the book. One can clearly see the impish glee in the body language, facial expressions and tone of voice of the author. I suspect there is something to his suggestion that "Israelis like to talk". Evidently, he does not share the view that his revelations might at any rate present a threat to the security of the state he is writing about.

Terrorism strikes at average people so why shouldn’t they be targeted when they’re doing typical things?
