SRAM Automatix Shift Point Adjustment

Before building a wheel around my SRAM 2-speed Automatix internally geared hub, I needed to adjust the shift point. I was able to change the shift point from around 11 mph to 14 mph. This video shows you how I did it.

Thank you so much. I was just fiddling with my same hub and it's been almost a decade since I built the wheel around it and I was getting frustrated at the lower speed upshift. I knew I had to bend the spring but I couldn't make sense of it. I appreciate the documentation.

Great video!! Super helpful. I did mine in not much longer than it took for you to show yours. I also managed to bend the c-clip despite having seen your video but it also went back in just find after I bent it back. I'm using my Automatix hub with a 46/21 gear ratio on a 1962 Dunelt (Raleigh) for which I built some new wheels. I did add a little bit of grease to the ball bearings before putting it all back together since it seemed a little dry to begin with; I'm hoping it doesn't end up going into the hub and gumming up the sprung components. I presume that's why they didn't add much grease to begin with, but my experience with Sturmey-Archer hubs tells me that the small amount I added is fine. Fingers crossed lol

Great video, lots of detail, good explanations and sensible warnings, too! Thanks for a great demo - I'm thinking of buying one of these hubs and it was really useful to see what I'd be facing if I did so. I'm definitely a 'twiddler' so this issue is relevant to me.

Thanks, this helped me a lot. Wasn't difficult to do but without special tools or heating, the spring deforms a bit which may cause friction on the spring axle/pin and poor shifting.

I have this hub on my San Jose for about a year now, changed the shift point also. Running a 46/21 gearing with short arms, 155mm due to a knee replacement. My shift point is around 13-14 mph now. Have had no problems and the stiffer spring also helps keep it from shifting into hi over bumps as easily.

Great tinkering! was thinking to add this hub to my ebike

You could have the same result by taking some material of the weights by drill or grinding some off. But your idea works. Just wondering if the spring will be able to work the same way in a year or so.

Just for most certain explanation. Do you have to loosen or tighten the spring? It seems as if you loosen it, right ?

Forgive the potentially foolish question, but I'm assuming you could fit any sprockets you wanted to this, rather than sram ones produced at the time? Maybe some nice Russian Raketa track ones?

HELLO I SAW YOUR VIDEO ON YOUTUBE ABOUT SRAM 2 SPEED HUBS. QUESTION? do you have an email for correspondence? Thank you ! I am missing one of the top pawl springs. Where can I get new ones?

Great - it helped me to open it finally ;)
But... I am not sure it it actually works...
My kid has it in WOOM 3 bike, and when we are on the trip it looks like it is not swiching to second gear, because kid has to spin too fast :(
Both weights sticks out when I disassambled and spinned it. I recoreded it at slo-mo to makere they both do, but once I put everything back and tried to pedal the bike I do not hear or feel second gear :(
Any ideas guys?

Great video. Thank You. Except for the mph. I have no idea what is 18 mph in metrics. Oh well.

I have been thinking of adjusting the shifting point on my SRAM Automatix to a higher speed too, but I am considering another approach. Drill holes in the Centrifugal Weights to decrease the weight of these "pawls" so that higher speed would be required in order for the clutch to engage? Did anyone tried doing that?
