On January 15th of 2019, Entertainment Weekly broke the scoop that the legacy sequel Ghostbusters 3 is in development, and set for release on July 10th of 2020. It will ignore Paul Feig’s 2016 remake.

While the announcement was celebrated by the fans of the franchise, the decision to ignore the female centric remake has been widely derided and heavily criticized by numerous media outlets and other commentators. Emotions are high, the offense is deep, and the pitchforks are ready.

How on earth could merely announcing a new Ghostbusters movie turn into something this controversial?
And could the backlash cause Sony to get cold feet and pull the plug?

In this editorial, @AndreEinherjar will uncover that, by first providing take on what makes the original such a cherished classic, and recap how what started out as Ghostbusters 3 ended up as Paul feig’s remake in the first place. Then, how that remake became a symbol, and still flopped, before moving on to how this new movie could get announced, and if there is any chance the current pushback may ultimately prevent it from getting made.

I'm female and hate ghostbusters 2016 with a passion. It's not funny, forced story, lacks any passion and the characters just dont seem right. If you watch the original its just far superior in almost every way. Most of all, it had a good story, good characterisation, good pacing and (for the time) good effects.

I'm female and i hated the reboot. It was awful and not a good representation of any of those actresses talent anyway. The originals were much better. Does that mean someday Supernatural will be labelled bad because it was about two male leads? Can't a writer do what they want without twitter caring?

_Jason Reitman is directing Ghostbusters 3, and it's all your fault._
*- GOOD.*
_Why ignore the all-female reboot?_
*Because it SUCKED, and it IGNORED the originals! Win-Win ;D*

Well... I hate to break it to Paul Feig and the Ghostbusters (2016) cast, but not every female fan of the Ghostbusters franchise liked their movie. I was completely turned off by the trailer (none of the later ones sold me on the movie), the terrible dubstep theme song but what really made me want to stay away from it; was their attacks on the fans. Every time they said that those who pushed back against the 2016 movie were just a bunch of white manchildren, all I could think was: "I'm not white... I'm not a man... and I have 0 interest in your movie!"

Ghostbusters 3 has been in development hell for a very long time and to hear that they are finally going through with it warms my heart. It's a shame that those involved with the 2016 version are throwing a fit and once again going with the "misogyny" complaint.

Some food for thought: for them to completely ignore that Ghostbusters has female fans that did not like nor was interested in the 2016 version feels more misogynistic than anything else. The insults from those male fans who did shout that Ghostbusters couldn't be women was nothing in comparison to being completely ignored because it didn't fit with their slams of the fans.

You nailed it. The Feig movie was never about the female cast. It was about being a reboot. Nobody wanted a reboot. We wanted a legit third movie that continued from the original two.

You got to respect James Rolfe. He put out that video about not reviewing or seeing the movie because it wasnt what he wanted to see from a Ghostbusters movie and that was it. It didnt matter that the media insulted him, he just ignored it and didnt feed into the drama. He was 10 times the person they were.

If they're so upset about the cancellation, where were they when it came time to watch it in the cinema?

It's not hard to figure out.. "Give the people what they want." Respect the audience and drop the politics.

You have got to be kidding me. The damn female Ghostbusters ignored the first 2 films and now they complain when the new director does the same thing??

"Who is to blame?"
*A bunch of fingers pointed at Paul Fieg*

Good job :P

Ghostbusters (1984): Sci-Fi Horror Comedy Drama
Ghostbusters (2016): Obvious 3rd wave feminist propaganda film with hardly any plot nor clear genre.

Leslie Jones is just mad that she’s not part of the series of Ghostbusters film people actually WANT to see.

They love to blame the reboots failure on misogynists and racism/sexism. Yet the real reason it failed was because it was another reboot that no one wanted.

Rotten tomatoes shouldn't be a thing after what they pulled.

The irony is, the 2016 remake was meant to be a symbol of 'political progression' and yet cast the the three white actresses to play the scientists and cast the black actress to play the wise-cracking, street-talking subway worker.

Paul Feig is just somebody with major mommy issues. He reminds me of Norman Bates...but not as funny.

There is no backlash, Ghostbusters 3 would make good money, for sure

I don't understand why Leslie Jones thinks her Ghostbusters was the first Ghostbusters ever made. The female Ghostbusters is a stand alone film set in there own universe. It absolutely has nothing to do with the original Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters 3 is a direct sequel to part 1 and part 2. She has it twisted
