I have been asked the meaning to this song many times, so I wanted to address it. When I wrote this song...

I imagined a scene/story.

In my mind it was a car crash where the woman was dying, and the man survived. She was passing on as he held her. The first verse is the guy singing to her (his love.)

He was singing to her at the crash site

That’s why his lyrics are
What’s going on?
The look in your eyes tells me there’s something wrong.

That’s painting the picture of her not being responsive, and him realizing it. He is so devastated he’s even willing to “sell his soul for her to pull through.”

The woman’s part.
She’s in spirit form not realizing she’s dead, as she’s walking towards the crowd that is gathered around her body.

Which is why she says “I can feel the crowd thinking oh my god, ” and “I can’t feel anything.” She is realizing she is passing on / passed on.

“I’ve been dancing with your ghost” in the chorus, is about them refusing to let each other go.

It’s a story of eternal love.

This just hit hard for me. I was with the love of my life for 6 yrs, we were due to be married Oct 19th, 2017. He passed away in an accident Sept 24th 2017... 25days before our wedding day.. I lost my soul mate 12 years ago. He had MS and was talking one minute, the next he reached out to me..I jumped up and helped him sit up on the edge of the bed. He put his head on my shoulder and passed. Right there, right then.
He died exactly where he wanted to...in my arms.
That was the moment that changed my life and path in an instant. I was in shock for days... the morning after I awoke and crawled around the yard. I didn't know what I was doing.
I had to tell myself to breathe, walk, and function through day to day.

This is such an emotional song for me. Its both dark and beautiful. As I listen to this I think of my BIL who died quickly due to cancer. We watched him pass unable to do anything for him. Cancer ravaged his body beyond repair. Multiple mini strokes paralyzed him within himself. It was heartbreaking to watch. Unable to eat, talk, move but his eyes you could see everything in those eyes. The pain.. so I think of him when I listen to this. Our family never got over his death. Always in our hearts miss you bubba.
