Transcendent. Rachmaninoff's exquisite Moment Musicaux No. 5 has a simple beauty that will transport you. Please listen to all of it. You'll be glad you did.
Notes from pianist Duane Hulbert: "Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Six Moments Musicaux” was composed in 1896, when the composer was 23 years old. The pieces in the set alternated between brilliant, frenetic technical studies (numbers 2, 4 and 5) and lyrical introspective pieces rich with agonizing pathos and drama. (numbers 1, 3, and 5). At the time, Rachmaninoff was suffering with depression due, in part, because of an incident on a train where he was robbed of a large sum of money he was carrying for someone else. A year later, his First Symphony premiered and received a disastrous review by a fellow Russian composer, Cesar Cui. After the concert, Rachmaninoff fell into a three-year long depression. He remained in a depression until 1901 when his famous Piano Concerto No. 2 was performed for the first time to rave reviews. Rachmaninoff credited his recovery to his psychiatrist Dr. Nikolai Dahl (to whom he dedicated. the concerto).
The Moment Musicaux No. 5 is rich in melancholic lyricism that floats above a constant triplet accompaniment in the bass line. There are 204 consecutive triplets from the beginning to the end. The harmonies are complex and chromatic, typical of works in the late Romantic music from the turn of the century. The work is full of surprising harmonic chords in the right hand. The pathos in this work make it one of the unknown gems from the early years of this Russian master of the piano."
