The Crescent Rose is described in lore as a hybrid of a war scythe, scythe and a bolt-action sniper rifle. In the video, and the way Ruby normally wields it, is primarily in its traditional scythe mode. However, it has the ability to transform into a war scythe.

It's worth noting that a war scythe is distinct from a traditional scythe. It is a type of polearm featuring a curved, single-edged blade, with its cutting edge positioned on the concave side of the blade.

Here is another thing, the Cresent Rose is HEAVY! The main reason it's a 50 cal rifle (besides it's use for long range) is to get enough momentum to just swing the thing. She got away with it by using "Blanks" and using the propellent from the dust to swing the scythe. Without the dust or if you run out, it's basically a Barrett your are trying to fling at people.

Funnily enough they do bring up that Crescent Rose is an unbalanced and dangerous weapon in the hands of someone who doesnt know how to wield it properly. Ozpin, a warrior who is thousands to possibly millions of years old, describes it as one of the most dangerous weapons ever designed. Ruby is just stupidly good at wielding it, and can compensate for some of the drawbacks of the weapon by using the rifle portion of the weapon to propel herself or enhance the velocity and power of her swings and pulls. And the reason for the smaller curved blade on the back is primarily because Ruby modeled Crescent Rose after the weapon of her uncle and mentor, Qrow, who has a similar blade on his scythe but with actual functionality, with it serving as a reverse warpick in scythe mode and as a handguard when his weapon is transformed into a sword.

Another aspect I've noticed is that the little point on the bottom of the shaft could really only be used once you've managed to get a person on the ground and there's little to no chance of them being able to react in time.

Finally, coverage of a scythe as a weapon! I definitely agree that the worst part and the reason I'd never want to use a scythe as a weapon is it is horribly unbalanced.

Pretty much all your effective attacks are pulling ones, and if you swing too hard and leave yourself off balance, that could be the end.

There is also the danger of someone closing the distance to deny you the space needed for the swing and pull motion.

If I had to use a scythe as a weapon, I think I would try and use it more defensively, using the back of the blade to maintain distance while trying to bait them to try and sidestep around. If they step inside I can then try and sidestep to turn the blade inwards possibly letting me trip/cut their calf with a low sweep.

Another pro is that in volume 7, the crescent rose got an update. It can now rotate the head of the scythe to the other way when needed. It can also rotate the scythe forward that basically changes the weapon into a a spear like or a naginata (shown in volume 8 when Ruby was fighting Neo).
Another con is that with this update, it has even more moving parts that can break.

Funfact. The blade can shift upwards, ruby has done stabbing attacks with the main scythe blade. (Like how a war scythe is built)

(Also with it being a hybrid weapon. The top of the scythe actually fires out shots).
