Always keep living roots in the ground. Diversity of cover-crops, will feed diversity of micro organisms in the soil. Soil biology is required for minerals to be released for plant absorption. Chemical fertilzers do not improve the life in the soil. Life in the soil together with living roots will create a "carbonsponge", it will drawdown co2 in to the soil. When you do not feed the soil biology through living roots or when you disturb the soil life by tilling or chemicals, you loose carbon as co2, it will go up in the air.
