WandaVison: AGATHA Was Right (And is a Better Hero Than Wanda) | Marvel Villains EXPLAINED

WandaVision was a show filled with epic mysteries. And the show's biggest reveal that Agnes was actually another witch named Agatha, who was manipulating Wanda, all along. But was Agatha really a villain? Or was she trying to protect reality, just like the Avengers. In this video we break down her motives, and show why she's more like Tony Stark and Doctor Strange than Loki or Red Skull.

Agatha was honestly a great magic therapist to Wanda. If she really was a villain, then she would have just fought her at her weakest point. Instead, she helped Wanda understand her self and her feelings a lot more. She even taught Wanda more about herself.

I agree that Wanda is the main villain but I can’t give Agatha the “hero” tag. A hero doesn’t have to be 100% selfless, but there does have to be some sense of altruism in what they do. Yes, Tony let his ego get the best of him by creating Ultron, but he ultimately wanted to protect the world from outside threats. Strange Supreme might’ve destroyed his universe (understatement I know), but he did it to try and save someone’s life. Agatha has NO selfless goals in this show at all. Her mentality is “hey this witch in Jersey is super powerful. I need to take her power and become the most powerful witch.” She has no concern about the people Wanda’s torturing. When Wanda makes her think she’s given her her power, you can tell she was obviously gonna destroy Wanda and leave Westview without a second thought for the people. Where’s the heroism in that?

Agatha’s clearly someone who had her humanity and belief in others ripped away when her own coven, the people she loved and trusted the most, tried to freaking KILL her. Can you imagine your own mother telling you you can’t be a good person? Traumatizing indeed. Since then, her whole mentality is getting more powerful at any cost (“I take power from the undeserving, it’s kinda my thing.”) If people die, they die. Makes for an entertaining as hell character to watch, but not a hero.

I believe that wanda was delusional for most of the show and agatha’s motives were ultimately self serving. I wouldn’t go so far as to call either of them the hero. The heroes were the people on the outside trying to stop/save wanda from herself. The villains were the people who wanted to kill/take advantage of her. Wanda is more like the shark in Jaws or the tornado in Twister in this situation.

We can't really say that Agatha is a hero because we don't know what her plans are with Wanda's powers. The real hero of the show is Monica Rambeau, she wanted to help Wanda and that's what she did up until the very end. Give her the recognition she deserves :))

I agreed right up until the end. Agatha never says anything about wanting to protect reality or save the world. She never gives us any motive other than wanting Wanda's power for herself. It's definitely true that Wanda was wrong and became a villain, but Agatha was no hero here. She was an opportunist, hoping to get power for herself.

After watching Dr strange and looking back at this Agatha wasn’t really that much of a bad guy compared to what Wanda’s done and Agatha’s never actually killed anyone

I think it is too far to call Agatha a hero since all her actions were purely selfish. She didn't care if people were being hurt and wasn't trying to save them. Even if Agatha's 'therapy session' with Wanda did help her and ultimately lead to the release of the townspeople. Agatha was attracted to power and she had found the most powerful and dangerous being in the universe. She didn't want to destroy it she wanted it for herself. There's no telling what she would have done with the powers of the Scarlet Witch. But whatever it would have been it wouldn't have been good for anyone but herself (at least not intentionally). In the future Wanda would make an excellent villain because we have seen her capacity for good and how that has been tested and maybe destroyed. It all depends on perspective. To Wanda, Tony Stark was the villain of her childhood his weapons took her family from her. But Tony Stark did eventually create the thing she loves most- Vision. This is why I love the MCU so many different perspectives

The way I view it is; Agatha played it smart in order to steal Wanda's power, there are no heroes here. Agatha is taking her time gauging the threat before striking. Agatha is just power hungry.

This video is a very good outlook of Agatha, also Kathryn Hahn was fantastic as Agatha, really hope that she’s in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness it would add to her character and help Doctor Strange with Wanda

I love Kathryn Hahn. I’m so happy we’re going to get more Agatha. She was a great addition to the MCU

But Agatha was never trying to keep Wanda from doing harm, that was just a side effect of her trying to get the same power that Wanda has

I think the fact Agatha’s motives were self-serving rather negates any heroism. Wanda may have been too distraught to make sound decisions, but Agatha wanted her powers. Winning her over was to acquire it all. She just underestimated Wanda’s magical stature and perhaps, capacity for evil. I like your imagination though.

Though her actions were incidentally helpful, I think it's a stretch to think Agatha was being intentionally heroic. She had the power to free individuals from Wanda's control. She could easily have evacuated a good number of people without Wanda noticing, but she showed no indication of caring about their well-being, and actively manipulated some of them on top of Wanda's torture. She handled the threat of SWORD soldiers by picking them up in the air and, while they were helpless, would have let them fall to their deaths, while Wanda's strategy was to mind-control them out of threatening her, then leave without hurting anyone.
Agatha's primary motive seemed to be self-empowerment. She was willing to hurt innocent people and steal other witches' power to benefit herself, while Wanda hurt people unintentionally because she was too distracted by her personal struggle to think about the needs of others, who she would normally go out of her way to protect.

_"When I say that Wanda was the villain of the show, a lot of you are gonna argue with me"_
Nope, that's pretty much spot on, but what the show DOES do a GREAT job at is show how a person who had been "good" previously, can walk a slippery slope one step at a time and end up feeling fully justified in doing horrible things by the end, so much so, that you actually feel bad for her at the same time you realize she was wrong.

And that is MOST people that end up doing bad things. Once in awhile, you'll get someone who is truly evil and plans to be evil from the get-go, but that's rare, most often it's one-baby-step-at-a-time, so you need to watch those steps.

And as far as the MCU goes - I think WandaVision is going to be the exposition to set up Dr. Strange vs Wanda in the Multiverse of Madness, they needed a story showing why/how Wanda fell to the dark side as it were

I don’t think wanda even knows who Dr strange is currently? If I remember correctly they’ve never actually met face to face. Closest interaction being when she came out the portal to fight thanos in end game and with everything that was going on I doubt she paid that much attention to him. They’ll probably get a proper introduction in multiverse of madness.

I like how show runners now subvert the roll of “protagonist”. The protagonist is the character the show mainly focuses on. They don’t have to be a good guy. Light from death note is the protagonist, but L is the good guy.

Looking back on this episode I think that both were evil, we can’t forget that the dark hold corrupts the user. I’m sure we will revisit that in future projects.

The thing everyone seems to forget is that Wanda's kids were illusions that had only been around for a few days, and that she understood that they were fantastical.

I really like your points about agatha, she also had the darkhold so she was more villan than her normal self. About Wanda tho... I think its impossible for me to see her as a villan. Remember that when she knew people were suffering she stopped, she knew that she was mind controlling an entire town, yes, but she thought she wasnt hurting any1, remember that she said "you feel at peace" she really thought she wasnt harming any1. About the ethical implications of mind controllling an entire town, I also cant blame her bc she simply doesnt know any better, her whole life was misery, she doesnt know, she cant know why thats wrong. She just feels every time she has something similar to hapiness, it turns to shit. She wasnt in grief only bc of vision... She lost her parents, she was lied by the hydra and became a lab rat, she was controlled by ultron, she lost her brother, she was blamed for lagos when she actually did her best and after that was a criminal, she lost vision twice and after endgame no1 thought she needed help like daam, not even clint. She isnt like thor that lost everything but knew better, thor had the time to learn what is right or wrong bc his whole life was stable up to the point of the lost of his mother, wanda's life is 90% pain.

Wanda was reckless and dangerous. Agatha was power hungry after the fact but mostly just curious as to what power was in Westview
