Gas station cell phone explosion?
Static electricity fire from refueling then leaving the pump to go inside your car while the engine is running and the reentry of the vehicle causes the Static electricity when returning to the pump. unfortunately not all fueling stations have fire suppression systems. So today we test to see if a cell phone, smoking and much more can cause a fire.

Static electricity can definitely cause an ignition in the fumes. My dad was a truck driver and has seen it

Fuel vapor is heavier than air, when pumping gas the vapor floats everywhere from the stream of gas, but in a container with no airflow, it settles on the bottom. This is why he can get the flame so close.

Not sure if you could consider this a fair test if the inside of the jar is probably saturated way beyond the stoichiometric range.

Has anyone ever seen this happen & lived to tell the tale?

I haul fuel for a living. So you know that is static fuel the vapor is very minimal. Now when pumping fuel you have larger volume of fuel being pumped into a closed cell tank with only one exit that is where the nozzle goes in. It pushing all the vapor to that opening in a hurry also. It will not take much to ignite then because the larger concentration of fumes. When I am unloading at a stations I have a vapor hose that is connected to collect the fuel vapors back into my tank you can take that hose off while I dropping fuel and feel the vapor blowing out with a glove on. Now that is more extreme situation since I dropping fuel in the ground about 10 gallons a sec since I using a 4in hose. But that is why we are required to wear rubber chemical gloves at all times handling the equipment. Even all the metal on our trailers is non- ferrous which means can't create a spark. But we still have to wear gloves we don't mess around with safety when dealing with 8500 gallons of fuel on the truck and whatever amount is in the tank at a station.

Vapors/waters stick to glass....I think that's messing up this experiment....
With such a low volume of gas too its inaccurate, as the chain reaction is really what gets it going.

Lol has to be an open flame or spark you can literally drop the cigarette into the fuel and it won’t catch fire and yes I have tried it
