Luke/Acts | Christian Apologists will NEVER tell you this! Dr. Dennis R. MacDonald

Get a copy of Dr. Dennis R. MacDonalds new book

Dennis R. MacDonald's work on Mimesis is a literary tour de force. His deep understanding of the concept and its history shines through in every page, making for a truly enlightening read. His writing is witty and intelligent, making even the most complex ideas accessible to the lay reader. I found myself highlighting passages and dog-earing pages left and right, as his insights were simply that profound. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of literature and the role of imitation in the creative process. Bravo, Mr. MacDonald, bravo!

I've been waiting for someone to say this. Bart Ehrman goes as far as to say Acts is forged, but because he accepts the (IMO false) Q hypothesis he won't call Luke forged - even though they were written by the same author.

Glad this was cleared up for all the atheists who watch this channel. Now demonstrate there's any history in Luke/Acts.

I’ve been a Christian for 25 years I’m no longer a believer. Don’t know how to transition. I have a family of four . Any advice is welcome.

Thanks Doc and Derek…great stuff! Yeah we’re all getting sick of the lies and apologists know this but yet they have to continue with their
facades. My curiosity always wonders how many church Pastors know the truth but have to continue with the lies because they don’t have
any career skills and need a pay check each week. I won’t mention names but there are X-Preacher’s who had to walk away because their
moral code couldn’t keep lying to their congregations.

This theory goes for most ancient books, reality is we really don’t know much about history.

This must be the most insightful deep dive into the minds of the people who created the Jesus narrative.

Interesting because Raymond Brown in Jerome's commentary (this book has an imprimatur, so sanctioned by the Catholic church) openly states "Luke has reorganised the Isaiah prophecy to fit his theology" (this is the Jesus in a synagogue reading the scroll). Hardly a ringing endorsement of " this is exactly what happened"

I'm sure you'll get lots of Colin Hemer quotes in the apologetic response to your view on Acts... should be fun.

Personally, my favorite passage when talking about the historicity of Acts is the Ananias and Saphira passage. Pretty much everyone recognizes that the story as told is horrific. So what's going on there? Is it historical? Then God seems to be about as bad as the worst atheist caricatures portray him to be. Is it a fiction of Luke's own creation? Then we need to ask what else in Acts might be fictional. Is it just a legend passed down through oral tradition that Luke put in for whatever reason? Then he wasn't as careful and discerning as some would have us believe. Is the core of it based on a real occurrence, but it gets theologized by Luke to interpret the couple's death as divine punishment? Then what do we make of the theologizing that happens elsewhere in the book? There's just no good option for the apologists here.

I can't tell if you put reverb on this or recorded it in a shipping container. Surely there's a process you could run this through to take out the echo.

So we can't jump to conclusions yet. Not unless circumstances change first.
