The Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a small carnivoran native to Eastern Asia, it is known for its exclusively herbivorous lifestyle and its fur color, it is the only extant species of its genus and the family Ailuridae, it is a member of the superfamily Procyonoidea, a unique superfamily of carnivorans native to North America, Central America, South America, and Eastern Asia, this superfamily was far more diverse, but now it has fewer members than it had before, with Ailuridae being one of the four surviving families of the Procyonoidea superfamily, with the other three being Mephitidae (Skunks and Stink Badgers), Procyonidae (Raccoons and Bassarisks), and Nasuidae (Coatis, Kinkajou, Olingos, and Olinguito), Procyonoidea is also the only surviving taxon of the parvorder Mesopalmata, surprisingly, the red panda is the original panda as it was named and described four decades before the giant panda, which is not closely related to the red panda, but like the red panda also has a family of its own, with the giant panda being the sole extant member of the family Ailuropodidae, which is closer to bears (family Ursidae) and is classified with them under the superfamily Ursoidea, the superfamilies Ursoidea and Procyonoidea are both offshoots of the suborder Caniformia, but they belong to different infraorders, the Ursoidea superfamily belongs to the infraorder Cynopsia, which more closely relates them to dogs and pinnipeds, while the Procyonoidea superfamily belongs to the infraorder Galopsia, which would more closely relate them to weasels, the red panda is also split into two subspecies: the Eastern Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens styani) and the Western Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens fulgens).
