As a Black Appalachianer and hillbilly, I really enjoyed this story. The images don't really look like the Black people in my neck of Appalachia, but the sentiment is real. I'm from the Blue Ridge section of Appalachia in Va., and most of the Black people I know from here to East Tenn. and Ky are visibly admixed. Most of us around here have high levels of Melungeon and Free Mulatto admixture. Then there's the Va. Indian component as we all shared communities in the Colonial era. According to the DNA testing companies, we're about 35% European and 2% Indigenous. The rest is African. Hell, my ancestors John Venable and Solomon Sawyer were Confederates, as were a few others(Donathans, Goins, Evans, Gibsons, etc...). I'll forever be a part of this land that I love, but its beauty is being severely compromised by
