A Classic Joins the Collection -- Cold Steel Tai Pan

I am not sure why it took me so long to get a Cold Steel Tai Pan dagger, but it's been at least 25 years of yearning heartache. With the new 3V version coming out (and quite expensively) the VG-10 San Mai versions have seemed more within reach (for a knife that will never get use, if all goes well). The quad hollow ground bevels are bellied nicely for slashing while the tip is wickedly penetrative. It has an aluminum guard and skull crushing pommel with a grippy tapered kraton handle. This dagger is as sweet as I always thought it would be and is a joy to have in my collection of Cold Steel Knives.

What a coincidence. I had wanted one of these for decades but never got one and I recently took the plunge, just like you related. I made certain to get the San Mai instead of the 3V for "authenticity". I love it.

Great video, great dagger here ! I could be wrong, but I think a MASTER tanto is made of San Mai steel ; if it is not laminated steel it is a "regular" tanto .

Nice collection and video. The Tai Pan is still on my wishlist after 25 years also, someday maybe.

Like 'em or hate 'em, the Cold Steel monsters always make one pay attention. (I like 'em.) This phenomenal grouping is making today's fixie hip carry look like a nail file in comparison. (Grabs twin 7.5" SK-5 trench knives for the second half of video.) There, now I've got some BKE (Big Knife Energy!) ⚔

I waited 40 years for the real rambo knife by V.Neeley of Lile knives. $2100.00. A work of art. He finished it for me in November. I love yours. Sometimes things are worth the wait.

I'm a former US Army Ranger. I bought the Tai Pan quite some time ago. It's a large dagger and it's harder to conceal than other smaller daggers so realistically, it's probably best served on a combat kit for literal combat. That being said, if you can conceal it, it's a great defensive weapon to have on you. I love just about everything about this dagger. I love the point and the razor sharp edges that essentially continue all the way to the guard, which is very important when fighting with a dagger for several reasons. I love the width as well, which i don't believe hinders your ability to penetrate during thrusts. Though i haven't held it in quite some time, i don't remember having too much of an issue with the handle thickness. What I DO have an issue with is the guard. The guard needs to be angled back towards the tip and probably a little bit longer on the same sides as both of the edges. Also, the bottom edges of the guard need to be rounded off as they feel sharp, like the 90 degree angle on the spine of a survival knife meant to strike a ferro rod. LOL seriously. And the problem you face with a disaster of a guard like this is that you cannot fight as effectively with the dagger because of the disastrous guard design. It HURTS your hand, which WEAKENS your grip, which means your hand is much more likely to slide forward when your hard thrust hits something. I honestly can't believe they settled on that design for their guard. I can only imagine being in a fight for my life and stabbing and hitting a ballistic helmet or body armor with that small, sharp, ridiculous guard on there. For me it ruins the dagger.. which is probably why i put it away and have purchased a Bench Made Infidel, SOG Pentagon FX and OdenWolf SOW Catcher since purchasing the Tai Pan.... i really thought the Tai Pan would be the one and only dagger i would ever need. That ended up being false. If the handle was a little thicker and the guard designed properly, it would be the best damn dagger out there.

That Randell Dagger is phenomenal and the
Tai Pan is also, but I have to admit the Randell is King 👑
I own the Tai Pan San Mai and
Tai Pan 3v the new version although I wanted the DLC coated model, the
Bill Harcey Dagger 🗡️ look outstanding as well like it can take a whipping and keep on going.

I got my 3V Natchez Bowie for $400.00 on Midway. I love it and I think it's well worth $400 but I wouldn't have paid $540 for it.
The Tai Pan is sweet! 👍
