We have 3 black walnut trees. A number of years ago my husband spent a lot of time trying to open one nut. He decided to look up techniques to try and speed up the process. The book he found began with, " First, you get an anvil." 😊

Best money I ever spent was driving them to a hulling station. In my region they are usually Amish operated. I had several tons over the season though. Paid a very small fee to keep some hulled bags for curing, sold the rest to the hulling station. Cracking is harder for me.

I’ve heard walnuts can last indefinitely inside their shells so I’ve been looking for a good way to clean them just enough to dry and store them

Just watched his video the other day and I agree it's a good one! Thanks for mentioning his channel 😀

I have left the fresh nuts in the sun so the green hulls dried and shriveled up, and then just used a nutcracker to get the nuts out.Darn walnuts are messy and a lot of work.

Hornbeam is a legendary bow wood.
I've never had the privilege of working and coaxing one. But I will one day.

We put them in the driveway and the car husked them. My Granny made the most delicious Black Walnut cake 😋🤗

The 1st MO Confederate brigade was originally issued raw wool shell jackets, an off white. When the first marched into camp the other soldiers started beating like sheep. They used walnut and hickory hills and dyed their uniforms. That's why they were called the butternut boys.

I’ve heard of people putting the black walnuts out where they get driven over a bit. It knocks the hull off and then you pick up the nuts to dry a bit more on mesh racks before cracking the nut and picking the meat.

But really, that stuff stains EVERYTHING.

Can you make a video to bring awareness to the Hammond spring beauty that only lives in one field in the kittattiny ridge in nj?

I dye my traps in em. Done shirts before. I color anything white on hunting apparel with the dye made from husks…tons of uses. Just another wondrous thing God made for us to use.

the ink can be used to dye dark hair. I gave some juice to these girls from India that draw those fancy designs on skin. It lasted for days! and was free. They were asking me all next summer when the nuts would be ready. 😂
