I saw this last night — it was wonderful! … BUT the dancing lunatic during the auto-da-fé was undignified, broke the tension, and destroyed the fourth wall by interacting with the audience but not the characters. A very poor decision.
If you'd like to write your own opera, go right ahead, but if you're selling tickets for Verdi, then give us Verdi!
Again, besides this unfortunate distraction, it was a tremendous performance.
