- Weebs (and a ton of niches inside it: kawaii, etc). People loving manga/anime.
- Cosplay nerds (very often going to comic con events).
- Start Trek nerds (how dare you, mentioning Star Wars nerds, and not their cousins... :D )
- LOTR (Lord Of the Rings) nerds. Not so strong now, but back in the day you'd find kilometer long threads to discuss if the Balrog had wings or not (I think it didn't). Besides they'd meet often IRL cosplaying as Tolkien's books characters.
- LEGO nerds (and most of them with a **cough** age...I coughed 'cause I'm that age (or older) not 'cause I like lego (not really) ).
- History/battles nerds (another source of kilometers long forums threads) . These are useful nerds for an illustrator like me, as provide with amazing graphical info for my projects :D hehe
- Board games/tabletop/cards games nerds . Heck, there's even that huge site, Boardgamegeek. I set these in a very different category to video games. These have had a huge "reinassance" in the recent years. Is a lot more social, real human iteration (imo, healthier).
- Pottery geeks (there's such a thing).
- Steampunk geeks. And similar 19th century nostalgic hipsters (some of very young age!). They even cosplay like people of the 19th century and have many items that remind of that time. Often waste a ton of money on vintage items (but they're happy with it, so...)
- Knitting nerds
- Alien matters nerds (to crazy extents, remember the recent area 51 event).
- Meme nerds (I do a full category of this. You don't get their language and sayings if you don't know a minimum of 3.000 famous memes; ie, you're out of the conversation otherwise, can't understand a thing if so. Trust me: it's getting out of hand. A lot of these creatures "live" in Reddit).

There's many, many more. These are the few I can think of in a minute.

Edit: Typos. And I'm sure I left a lot more in, sorry.
Edit: To me, these are "major branches". As the numbers inside each... these are legions.

I think to put it a little more broadly there’s pop culture nerds I guess, or cultural nerds in general, which would probably encompass Star Wars, Star Trek, anime, comic books, movies, etc.
But yeah, there’s also science nerds.
Theater and poetry nerds are definitely a thing- I was in theater myself in high school, I know there’s definitely a specific flavor of nerdery for them.
Bookworms, I think they deserve their own class maybe. Although those might also fit under “cultural” too.
Math nerds. Math nerds are definitely a thing. Probably overlap with the science nerds a little bit there.

I think that there’s probably a type of nerd for almost all aspects of society, or at least for every subject covered in schools, and the lines kind of blur a little bit between different “types” of nerd lol.
I feel like you can make a massive chart of different “types” of nerds, and probably go in depth studying the anthropology of nerds. And it’d most likely be anthropology nerds conducting the studies of other nerds.

I forgot... Ruby nerds! :D I worked with one 7 years at a company (me doing the graphics, css and html for him to integrate). Trust me, they are geeks (some, to worrying extents).

Tank nerds are a big one. They can go on forever. They memorize dozens of tank types and configurations. Might be on the autism spectrum. Nothing wrong with that.

Camera nerds. They will gush over the hardware specs of the camera body and lenses but take mediocre images.

Logistics nerds. These people worked Uber in the early days not because they needed the money. They wanted to "hack" the system. They were trying to find a way to get the best-paying trip for the smallest amount of time.

* Harry Potter nerds
* Literature nerds, tho this tends to branch of and specialize based on genre, period, language, form of expression (poetry vs novel vs essays/non fictions)
* Fantasy/LARP nerds
* Horror/Zombie nerds
* Gun nerds. You won't wanna call them nerds right to their faces, you know, because they have guns. But they are nerds.
* Survival preparedness nerds. Often are also gun nerds. Usually ex-military but not always.
* Makeup nerds
* Gastronomic nerds. Chefs and gastronomes who like to have their omelettes Would throw a tantrum if you pair the wrong type of wine with a meal.
