The lecture provides a summary of important aspects and concepts in the development of mathematical epidemiology. It recalls the development of the first models for infectious diseases, passing through the consecrated SIR model (Susceptible, Infected and Recovered), to the present day with the challenge of studying new diseases, as currently occurs with the Covid-19 epidemic.
