An anti-Islam activist, Rasmus Paludan, burned copies of the Muslim holy book, the Quran, in front of a mosque and the Turkish Embassy in Denmark, causing outrage among the Turkish government and Muslims around the world.

Paludan, who holds both Danish and Swedish citizenship, had previously staged a similar Quran-burning protest in Sweden on January 21.

Paludan has promised to continue this demonstration every Friday until Sweden is admitted into NATO.

Turkey has indicated that it will block Sweden's bid for NATO membership, in part due to Paludan's actions.

The Danish Ambassador was summoned to the Turkish foreign ministry where Turkish officials strongly condemned the act and demanded permission for the demonstration be revoked.

The Turkish foreign ministry later called Paludan an "Islam-hating charlatan" and expressed concern that tolerance for such actions threatens peaceful coexistence and provokes anti-Muslim attacks.

Protests were held in several predominantly Muslim countries to denounce Paludan's protest, and the US issued a security warning cautioning US citizens in Turkey about possible retaliatory attacks against places of worship or places frequented by Westerners following the Quran-burning incidents.
