I think the last step missing is adding up the last signal X_AM(f) (with negative outer band) with the original one (all positive). The plus and minus in the outer band will cancel out and we will be left with only the inner band. So all of this is a way to get a single side band (here the inner band) without the use of a high-pass filter which would be non ideal.

Also, at 13:32 there is a small mistake. Professor says (-j)*(-j) gives +1, but in fact (-j)*(-j) = +j^2 = +(-1) = -1, and the drawn arrow should point to the negative outer band on the right side. The positive bands are actually the result of j*(-j) and (-j)*j.
