Vatican's Financial Auditor Speaks Out

Libero Milone was appointed by Pope Francis to be the Vatican's first ever auditor general in 2015. In a historic move, he was told that he had access to all areas, and would be free to audit the accounts of any Vatican department he wished. Formerly he had worked as chairman and CEO of Deloitte in Italy, as well as a number of big firms in the UK and USA. Milone was shocked to see the standard of accounting and bookkeeping in certain parts of the Vatican, and claims he started to encounter problems with the Vatican's 'old guard' when he started to ask questions about certain transactions and sums of money. After only two years in the job, he abruptly resigned, he claims by force because he was starting to uncover major financial mismanagement and fraud at some of the highest levels of the Catholic Church.

Now Milone is taking a €9.3m lawsuit against the Vatican for unfair dismissal, loss of income, and emotional distress. The case was thrown out by a Vatican court, but Milone is now appealing.

In this extended one-on-one interview with EWTN's Colm Flynn, Milone talks about working with Pope Francis to bring about financial reform, and the problems he resistance he started to come up against, and why he is now speaking out and telling his story.

This man was European head at Deloitte. He’s a seriously capable and respected operator. You going to believe the disgraced Cardinal Becciu ahead of this guy? Please. Shame on the Vatican.

Dear Mr. Milone,

Thank you so much for your courage and devotion to our Savior to honorably and honestly audit the results of operations and financial position for the Vatican. Like you, I am a Deloitte (Haskins & Sells) alumnus. Like you, I am a practicing and contributing Roman Catholic.

You didn't sue enough. Money appears to be more precious to some in the Vatican than Fear of the Lord. You watch over those the Vatican. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. We need to have much more men of your caliber.

Thank you so much again. Ad Marjorem Dei Gloriam

Take care, Owen

PS Please consider your next assignment to audit the United States Government. Please bring an army of angels.

This is a refreshingly honest man. He says 95% of the church men he worked with we're good, 5% we're bad. How many people, who have suffered as he has, would not come out and say, or give the impression, they are ALL corrupt. Here we have an honest man.

I'd rather believe this man rather than those cardinals or bishop! It's so shameful to hear!

Judas Iscariot was in charge of money. Anyone in charge of money, especially in religious or charity organisations, must be cleaner than clean. Any bishops complaining about auditors should step down from managing money, just do religious work.

Mr Milone you are a bright light for truth and justice. Thank you for your courage. My prayers are with you and your family. The shameful, ruthless treatment you have received casts a dark shadow over the Vatican as we come closer to the Holy Year.

Please keep exposing this kind of evil, and at the same time spread the beautiful works that these people have done, doing and will be doing. It's always good to have both of the stories.

These cardinals who feel righteous by stealing and lining their own pockets, need to pay back this money. 😢

Great journalism by EWTN, Bravo! Mr. Milone needs to obtain justice in the morass of corruption. Why did the Pope hire him in the first place? Naivete? Short-lived good publicity? The truth is always heaven sent.

If true, the person who threatened him needs to be held accountable and criminally prosecuted. Holy Father needs to take initative to meet with him and personally appologize.

To Mr Milone.
You will be successful as your claim has merrit and you served the Vatikan, headed by the Pope in good faith.
The interview gave me the impression that you are an honest and meticulous man. Both qualities I would look for when needing an auditor.
Not only the money corrupts, influence and reputation can also lead good men astray.
