Old School Judo VS Modern Judo

You guys asked for judo so here it is.

This video was made for comedic purposes. Please do not take offense if you are a judoka.

I have tremendous respect for judo athletes of all eras, but much like karate, certain rule changes influence the sport and it becomes altered.

Did I cherry-pick? Yes of course. Modern Judo still has beautiful throws but if they both look good then it's not really funny.

Although maybe this sort of video works with TKD (I'm not sure, I don't train in it), but like the description says, this one actually is quite cherrypicked. Although leg grabs were banned, this wasn't for "safety concerns" or anything like that, but rather because people were using both hands on both the opponent's trousers to stall for time (there are other reasons, of course, but I really think this was the main one). Many rule changes in judo (time limits on certain gripping positions, banning certain grip breaks, and penalties for false throws and stalling) have all been designed to prevent "negative judo". An example of "negative judo" would be like getting a single small point early on (once known as Yuko or Koka), then whittling the time away with overly safe play.

Many purists argue that any and all rule changes "dilute" the sport, but I would argue that modern day judo is still very explosive, athletic, and dynamic. Of course, some rule changes have been questionable (I really liked korean seoi nage), but overall, I think a lot of old school judoka just like to complain.

The clips of 'modern' judo are all of heavy weight player like 100kg+ and 78kg+, this means that the players will be slower and more strength driven. Whereas if you look at lower weights such as u66kg or u73kg the judo will be more active and more entertaining. Overall I think that this video did 'modern' judo an injustice.

It seems to be “light weight vs heavy weight” rather than “old vs modern” …

I speak as a novice - but - it is not so much the way modern sport judo has evolved but the lack of the survival of traditional Judo for those who want to practice it. Everything in Judo has become oriented towards the sport system. The omission of leg grabs has dealt a serious blow to Judo, among other rule changes. The martial art was a complete grappling system that was effective.

Judo is one of the few martial arts that didn't get screwed by the Olympics. The rules are bullshit but unlike sport TKD and Karate, alot of Judo places still put their training for self defense and real fighting as priority. They banned Korean Seoi Nage this year ? I will still use it in randori, who could banned me ?

As a judoka, I absolutely hate the modern judo. I trained at an old school gym that didn't attend any competitions cause it wasn't for sport. And even if it was we went with the old school rules 🥋

I've been participating in Judo since I was a young child, and it is by far the Martial Art that I have the most experience with. I've also participated in Ju Jutsu (Japanese) and Freestyle Wrestling, both on the club level. However, I've never competed in any of these sports simply because of time constraints: Either school work when I was younger or erratic work schedules as an adult negated my availability on weekends.

I was an assistant instructor for a short time (approximately one and a half years), and I think the final straw was when the gym I was working for decided to eliminate what they called the "free sparring" period. Meaning that the students and instructors could use any wrestling or grappling technique they could at full contact on the mat to hone their skill for up to an hour. I was a favorite sparring partner for a lot of the advanced students, and once we stopped simulating actual fights, I simply didn't see the point anymore. I respect the Olympics and always will, but I hate what Sport Judo has become. That isn't how I was taught.

Yes, Judo has heavily degraded instead of improving as would be natural. I don’t think there is really any question of whether this is the case. The question really is, why did Judoka by in large abandon a tradition of effective self defense grappling in favor of listen to the idiots at the IJF?

I know this is comedy and I found it really funny! But for people who maybe don't know: Judo banned all throws wich involve a leg grab in 2012.

There also where a few changes regarding certain grips on the jacket as well but all these changes where made not for safety reasons but to make the sport more interesting and to have more big throws, all in all that worked, as there are statistics on the number of big throws increasing.

Many people still don't like the new rules tho, as they take away techniques and tactics wich alot of people liked and wich where effective for self defense.

Although if you ask me, if your goal is self defense you should just train self defense and not an Olympic sport...
