Works! Build this over water and standing AFK at 130. It gave around 1000/h. Java singleplayer. Also changed glass to normal stone so it stays on 0 light.

this is a great farm. keep in mind that our spawn radius is 128 so going up only 80 means you'll need to be sure to light up caves up to below. the point of this farm and the afk spot is that you're up at such a height that only this build is within your spawn radius AND the build is made in such a way that only creepers can spawn in it. i've always gone up about 115 blocks myself.

I did some testing and found the actual rates and how to more than double them. The base farm makes about 150 gunpowder/hour (1/10th the advertised rates) and you also have to light up about 80 blocks around the farm plus nearby caves to get max rates. To improve the rates, you should:

1: replace the campfires with soul campfires to both kill the creepers faster, and to decrease the light level to allow more spawning

2: build up 119 (39 extra) scaffolding instead of 80 to move the despawn sphere up high enough so you don't have to light up any caves, and so you only have to light up about 30 blocks around the farm (note: if you build up more than 119 scaffolding, the farm will break).

With both these upgrades, the farm gets about 360 gunpowder/hour. Hope this helps!

Quick tip, Use soul campfire instead. They produce less light and kills creepers faster

For anyone wondering, it works perfectly in 1.20.1. However, be careful. As literally every comment says go up 115…. but ONLY 115. I made mine about 130 and it didn’t work and I had no idea why. Then I just moved the afk platform down to 115 and it started working perfectly. This way you don’t have to light up caves… but I’d still suggest lighting up around the farm, it only took me like 40 torches or so. Maybe even turn your render distance down.

Farm works great in 1.20.1. I advise anyone who plans on building it to read the comments though, some give really good advice to make the farm yield better results

i did this and forgot to open the trapdoors so when i went down to check my gunpowder and saw nothing, i went into the farm and got an explosive surprise (many creepers waiting for me...)

1 stack and 44 stone brick, 2 stack and 12 trapdoor, 2 stack and 4 smooth stone slab, 12 carpet, 18 Glass, 2 Chest, 2 hopper, 2 campfire,

For anyone on bedrock/PE, I had to follow these steps to make it work:
-use full blocks instead of slabs on roof, and light up the roof

-instead of carpet, place buttons, with one block gaps in between on the floor. This leaves only 1x1 spots for creepers, so spiders don't spawn (Think checkerboard pattern)

-Place trapdoors on the ceiling above the floor blocks WITHOUT buttons on them (with one block gaps inbetween) The blocks with buttons are spawn proof, so won't need trapdoors above them.

-place AFK area 24 blocks up, as bedrock spawn distance is smaller

-Light up surrounding area and caves

-Move campfires twice as far away, as the light reduces spawn rates

-This farm works best at night

Hope this helps someone ^^

Also I set my simulation distance to 4 chunks, so if yours is higher and you don't want to change it, you'll have to either move your afk platform higher up, or light up more of the surrounding area

Edit: Also make sure there are no trapdoors on the ceiling above the pit, this makes it easier for creepers to pathfind into it

Light from the campfires leaks and lights up a few blocks of the spawning area which reduces efficiency abit. You can either replace them with magma blocks and hopper in minecarts like someone said or just move the campfires a few blocks down. Also remember to light up the surface and go up 110ish blocks up with scaffolding so no mobs spawn outside the spawning area.

Followed this guide about a year ago and built this on pocket edition. Added a trident killer and it worked just fine right in my base. I barely lit anything up in the area either. Had more than enough gunpowder for all my rockets. Just built it again on java now that I have a PC. I used soul camp fires. Made 2 layers and had a stack of gunpowder before I even finished building my afk platform! Awesome guide. Thanks bro!

Throughout the years, I have always come back to this design. It works, tons of gunpowder and cheap to build!

It Works! I did have to go up 115, though. As soon as I did that it worked perfectly. Just beat the ender dragon today so I am happy to have found this tutorial :) Thanks!

Thanks dude I was a bit skeptical on how this could work but it does in just 1 minute I already got 12 gunpowder it’s a whole lot faster than hunting for them

If it helps someone you can replace the water and campfires with magma blocks and then below it minecart with hopper that goes to a hopper conected to a chest.
Just make redstone rails below all six magma blocks

I built this farm on my 1.19.3 vanilla server with a few minor changes, which I'll explain below. In 2.5 hours, I got 10 stacks of gunpowder. I believe the rates get worse if there's more people on the server, however I was the only on for the entire time I was AFK.

So, the changes:
I built the farm over an ocean, so that mobs can't spawn in the caves or whatever below the farm, assuming they're close enough to still be loaded in. Also saves some torches since I don't have to light up the nearby area or caves.
I replaced the campfires with soulfire campfires, as they do more damage. Shouldn't affect rates, but I'm listing everything here.
I also broke the two blocks where the water ends, so that the water will flow an extra 7 or 8 blocks. This places the campfires farther away, reducing the amount of light leaking through into the spawning area. I didn't check if it would actually be necessary with soulfire campfires, since IIRC they emit less light, but I did it anyways.
I went up about 110 blocks in scaffolding, making the farm slightly more efficient, since the spawning radius is 128 for mobs.

I do highly recommend building this, and if those rates aren't enough for you, remember you can always stack more ontop. I also earned 12 stacks of iron blocks from the iron farm which was also loaded in while I was AFKing.

I love how you got 112 gunpodwer in 10 minutes, wich is 672 per hour, put the title says 1500+ per hour
Edit: wow im getting 46 gunpowder an hour nice farm design

Build it in a single player world and I have to say I am impressed by how efficient it is. I decorated the afk spot to look like a hot air balloon and removed the scafolding as I will never have firework shortages ever again.

For those having issues with no creepers spawning, or very low rates, I found they won't spawn while the cats are visible. I made the blocks that the cats sit on move up and down with sticky pistons on a clock and I get creepers spawning now.
