Here we are using the CAGED Pentatonic Scales I use all over my channel and learning more about where to find them with ease. This will take practice, but practice makes perfect. When we can see the CAGED chord shape first, we will be able to jump around the guitar neck and move our pentatonic scales more and more We are taking a look on how to navigate with a new mindset of guitar chords (CAGED chords) showing us the way. I hope you enjoy.

This guy makes more sense than anyone I've seen on YouTube. This is the first time I've watched him. Understandable, accessable and easy to remember.

Yes yes yes!
In addition to the rule: Root of Chord = Root of Scale
I would add the rule: String Name of Root of Chord = Caged Shape (!!!)
Every CAGED shape has two root notes -- one closest to the nut, and one closest to the bridge. (And some of them have 3 root notes, because there are two "E" strings -- 1 and 6 -- where the notes are the same.)
Whatever string the nut-side root is on, is the name of the CAGED shape that you're playing.
Play an E chord with your index finger hitting the E note on the 7th fret of the 5th string -- the A string. You're playing the A chord shape.
Play an E chord with your index finger hitting the E note on the 9th fret of the 3rd string -- the G string. You're playing the G chord shape.
Play an E chord with your index finger barring the 12th fret hitting the E notes on the 1st and 6th strings - the E strings. You're playing the E chord shape.
Play an E chord with your index finger hitting the E note on the 2nd fret of the 4th string -- the D string. You're playing the D chord shape.
Play an E chord with your index finger on the 4th fret and your middle finger hitting the E note on the 5th fret of the 2nd string -- the B string. You're playing the C chord shape. (The B string, in a lot of ways as we all know, is a little "special"! So if the nut-side root note is on the B string, it's the C chord shape.)
In all cases, you're playing the CAGED shape that matches the name of the string that has the root note closest to the nut. (And this works for any major chord, not just E; that's just the example I chose.)
This can be very helpful if you need to find a major chord anywhere on the neck -- assuming that you know the notes on the fretboard and you know your CAGED shapes. Need to play a C chord? Find a C note anywhere on the neck. What string is it on? Play the CAGED shape that has the root (closest to the nut) on that string, et voila! you're playing a C chord. And since it's a C chord, there's a C major pentatonic scale shape that encompasses that chord shape, right there under your hand.

Stich explains the Caged system so very well. I’ve watched his major and minor Caged videos many times to refresh my memory and solidify the system in my mind. Thank you Stich for being a great teacher.

I have been searching as many of these lessons as I can. No matter how I'm feeling I always add to my understanding if I watch one of these video tutorials. Ian Stitch (I think it's Ian) is so personable and engaging, somehow the information just flows. Man, you can talk about all the greatest guitar heros there have ever been, Ian Stitch has to be among them. Nobody ever shone a light like this wonderful teacher. I so glad I discovered this. Thank you, you are a true guitar hero!

Superior presentation. I find your lessons to be several layers higher than most lessons on YouTube and delivered with much clarity. I bought your pentatonic chart yesterday and now see that I really need to take your classes because your content is priceless not for just the information which has been around for ages but because you really do show viewers how all of this is really stitched together....I get it....been playing guitar for over 50 years and didn't get it like I do you for that. I am a fan. Looking forward to more of your lessons. Be blessed.

Skate with your eyes; perhaps the most apt analogy I've ever heard! What you are teaching here is one of the most important concepts to master, in my opinion. I learned the 5 shapes early on but am still working through how to effectively use them. I don't think I've ever seen it laid out so clearly. I will watch this over and over until it clicks. GREAT lesson! Your stuff is always informative, instructive and inspiring. Thanks!

This is the video that really unlocked the fretboard for me. Seeing the chords within the pentatonic boxes, everything being movable, CAGED shapes connecting up and down the fret - suddenly the guitar wasn't so mysterious. Thanks Ian :-)
