I was on a jury for a murder trial back in the 80s. No DNA evidence. Tons of circumstantial evidence. As then, jury members today still have to use common sense and think objectively and critically to the best of their collective abilities. Then talk, reasoning it out, and voting until there's hopefully a consensus on the verdict.

I think he was twisted and wanted to prove he was smarter than everybody and he could do the perfect crime and get away with it

we don't actually know he asked "who else did you arrest?". we only know someone reported him to have said it. it might have been "did you arrest anyone else?" which is quite different, but close enough word-wise.

agreed he is a loner without friends, he did it alone!

I think he was capable of acquiring small amounts of decoy blood that he planted at the scene, not knowing his sheath blunder also left his own dna. He had to be convinced he could escape capture by clever plotting, thinking he had a superior intellect. He befriended serial killers and got pointers, studied murder cases obsessively, and was only excited by the prospect of getting away with his crimes.
