I used to perform magic, so maybe I can be helpful here. Michael didn't wait specifically for that item to be returned. He would just be waiting for someone to come in with something that was big enough for the trick to work - even if he had to use the box an item was in. Also, he would have more than one trick ready - like any good magician. Watch his 'behind the scenes' videos and you'll see how many people he has to wait sometimes before a trick is possible. I carried a trick around for 2 months once waiting for the perfect moment! Most magicians do - our pockets/jackets are loaded with all kinds of gimmicks, especially if we know we're going to perform. If you watch more videos you'll see how he performs different tricks in the same shops depending on what opportunity presents itself, because that's what a professional magician practices to be able to do.
