Daniel, Me Estás Matando: Tiny Desk Concert

This Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 NPR Music celebrates artists from all corners of Latinidad with an 'El Tiny' takeover.

From the opening flourish of its first song, the Mexican band Daniel, Me Estás Matando, aka DMEM, makes it obvious that the group is leaning into the drama and passion of the Latin song style known as bolero. In fact, with just a hint of a raised eyebrow, the band describes its own take as “Boleroglam.”

On DMEM’s first song, it’s as if lead vocalist, drummer and band namesake Daniel Zepeda is mustering up his last bit of emotional courage to spin this tale of heartbreak. Show business schtick aside, what impresses during the group’s turn behind the Desk is the high quality of musicianship from DMEM co-leader and guitarist Iván de La Rioja and the rest of the band. The four part harmonies in only the first two minutes of the opening song reinforce the “heart on the sleeve” emotions of the genre.

If you grew up with this style of boleros, you probably imagine a group of guys in neat, three-piece suits gathered around a mic or the table at your favorite Mexican restaurant. It’s the music of our parents but in the hands and voices of Daniel, Me Estás Matando, the agony of love with these intricate harmonies becomes intergenerational.

Daniel Zepeda es uno de los músicos más cabrones de México, como baterista es un monstruo de tallas internacionales que fácilmente se codea con los más grandes del mundo, y no siendo suficiente eso, canta, compone e interpreta boleros (bolero glam como él lo llama) de una forma sin igual. Es simplemente uno de los talentos mexicanos más importantes de la actualidad y este Tiny Desk no hace nada más que reafirmar eso. 🫶

As someone who grew up with a father and a grandfather who'd put on bolero music at the most random times, and left me an impression of an antiquated genre; falling in love with modern boleros through this band has really made me appreciate the entirety of the genre a lot more.

Love Daniel, Me Estás Matando, and can't wait to see them live again later this year.

El octubre pasado fui al consulado de EU a sacar mi visa. Delante de mi, había un tipo con un bigotazo y un particular estilo alternativo. A los dos nos sacaron de la fila porque no leímos que los electrónicos estaban prohibidos (yo llevaba mi cel y él su cargador). Le dije que un amigo me estaba esperando en Starbucks y que podía dejar su cargador ahí, pero él me dijo que ya tenía con quién dejarlo. Luego me lo volví a topar en la fila y pensaba ¿De dónde conozco a este wey?, y él me veía con cara de "¿porqué se me quedá viendo este wey? ¿Será que este wey me reconoció?". Total, me dio pena, así que ya no le dije nada y ya que me fui recordé donde lo había visto, era el mismísimo Daniel!
