I would put your feet in a wider stance so you don’t have your knees hitting your chest and thus reducing your ROM.

When I press I shouldn't fully straighten my legs right? Someone at the gym told me that over time my knees could get damaged. Is that true?

Ehm. I'm doing a 🐸 frog. So. Both hip and knee flexion? Legs wide. Feet at an angle \ / going kinda past my body almost into the safety catch.
