Man Of Science, Man Of Faith

One of the best scenes from LOST (1x24 - Exodus - Part 2):

Jack: What the hell was all that about back there, John?
Locke: What was what about?
Jack: You asked me to let you go.
Locke: That's right.
Jack: That thing was taking you down the hole and you asked me to let you go.
Locke: It wasn't going to hurt me.
Jack: No, John, it was going to kill you.
Locke: I seriously doubt that.
Jack: Look, I need for you -- I need for you to explain to me what the hell's going on inside your head, John. I need to know why you believe that that thing wasn't going to...
Locke: I believe that I was being tested.
Jack: Tested?
Locke: Yeah, tested.
Jack: I think...
Locke: That's why you and I don't see eye-to-eye sometimes, Jack -- because you're a man of science.
Jack: Yeah, and what does that make you?
Locke: Me, well, I'm a man of faith. Do you really think all this is an accident -- that we, a group of strangers survived, many of us with just superficial injuries? Do you think we crashed on this place by coincidence -- especially, this place? We were brought here for a purpose, for a reason, all of us. Each one of us was brought here for a reason.
Jack: Brought here? And who brought us here, John?
Locke: The island. The island brought us here. This is no ordinary place, you've seen that, I know you have. But the island chose you, too, Jack. It's destiny.
Jack: Did you talk with Boone about destiny, John?
Locke: Boone was a sacrifice that the island demanded. What happened to him at that plane was a part of a chain of events that led us here -- that led us down a path -- that led you and me to this day, to right now.
Jack: And where does that path end, John?
Locke: The path ends at the hatch. The hatch, Jack -- all of it -- all of it happened so that we could open the hatch.
Jack: No, no, we're opening the hatch so that we can survive.
Locke: Survival is all relative, Jack.
Jack: I don't believe in destiny.
Locke: Yes, you do. You just don't know it yet.

Season 1 Locke was one of the best characters in TV history.

And later on Jack said “this is our destiny”. Beautiful

From this to eventually: "You're not John Locke. You disrespect his memory by wearing his face but you're nothing like him. Turns out he was right about most everything."

It was great seeing Jack eventually become a man of faith. But it was sad to see the John because the opposite happened to him. He declined and lost his faith.

back when tv shows weren't as shitty

Those were my favourite Lost moments: When someone (usually Locke) would say something to Jack that made him question everything he believed in, and that look of bewilderment and defiance on his face, because part of him knows what the other person said is true, but he just REFUSES to accept it. Because he's Jack fucking Shepard and if he loses control of any situation, the world will end.

just now realizing that locke kinda had no choice but to be a man of faith because of his life. He probably had to cling onto the hope that everything was for a reason

Ever since I saw this scene for the first time I come back on a regular basis to watch it again. Words can't describe how much I love this scene. I wish I could see it for the first time again.

I’m a man of faith, but I love science!

If Boone didn’t die, then the world would have ended.

Locke wouldn’t t have had a breakdown on the hatch lid.

Which saved Desmond, had that not happened, the button wouldn’t get pushed and the world ends.

Locke was right “Boone was a sacrifice the island demanded”

Love how this switches in the last season. If only Jack believed him but Jack needed to grow and John knew that

Such great writing. LOST was a great show in the earlier seasons.

It's an interesting concept and I've had discussions with my father about it many times. He is a man of science purely, he doesn't believe in destiny or fate or anything beyond fact. This is an conversation that is as old as time - are we here for a reason or are we just a manifestation of science and fact? Does it all have a meaning or is there no meaning at all? There are two types of men in this world - Jack and Locke. Which one are you ?

Jack was right. That "thing" (man in black) was going to kill John and take his body.

So sad and unfair. Locke was such a great guy towards every survivor, like the dad they never had. And then the writers had to go and make him insane, as shown in this video. :(

This scene is great but the ending for the duo should've been way better. Both of them should've survived and protected everyone together.

J Locke é a personificação de que devemos seguir nossos instintos, a vida não é por acaso e o destino é inevitável

Locke was a candidate, so what exactly was the black smoke going to do to him?
