Van Jackson, senior lecturer in international relations at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand and writer of the Un-Diplomatic newsletter on SubStack, to discuss his recent book The Rivalry Peril: How Great-Power Competition Threatens Peace and Weakens Democracy, co-authored with Michael Brenes.

Van Jackson then joins, diving right into the effective myth the US has built up around the Cold War as a beneficial struggle between two great powers, a belief central to the evolution of the US’ counter-insurgency-focused regime of primacy that has developed in the power vacuum left by the Soviet Union, and why the US Foreign policy apparatus has been so resolute, from the Cheneys to the Biden Administration, in pivoting to a new great power struggle with China. Expanding on this, Jackson walks through the last couple of decades of US-China hawkery, with the shrinking dividends of Neoliberal globalization pushing both the US and Chinese economies toward economic nationalism, with the US establishment frantically attempting to cling to a dying world order of complete US primacy, as it corrupts and reshapes our politics domestically while contributing to death and destruction globally.

Not on topic at all, but as a Canadian I have been overwhelmed with pessimism and disappointment over the past few weeks and months. Sam, Emma and company- you’re the glue holding my sanity together right now. I have overextended myself and opened myself up to so much negativity by interacting with people on the right and I’ve watched “progressives” slowly move closer to the centre and even to the right. I am so thankful for all of you and your thoughtfulness and compassion. I hope you continue to fight for all of us.

Everybody talks about how important the Constitution is, but they ignore the preamble, the part of the constitution that explains the intent of our founding fathers.
"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
Lets take these one at a time.
Form a more perfect Union. - Failure (concentration of American wealth and resources to the wealthy)
Establish Justice. - Failure (if you can pay for a lawyer, you get justice, if you can't, you don't get justice)
Ensure domestic Tranquility. - Failure (more than 488 mass shootings in 2024. More Americans have died on American soil by American hands than all American casualties of every war.)
Provide for the common defense. - Pass (we have the strongest military)
Promote the general Welfare. - Failure (poverty in America is over 11% of the populace)
Secure the Blessings of Liberty. - Failure (corruption at every level of our governments)
If half of the ideals on this list were passes, this country wouldn't be the cesspool it's become.

If Russia gets Ukraine, Moldova will be next. Then possibly attempts to annex borders of the former USSR Republics that have large Russian populations

I feel like this is the agreement between Putin and Trump. Trump lets them rebuild a fraction of the USSR - Putin doesn’t drop whatever dirt/leverage he has on Trump’s Russian escapades - both nations benefit from economic reintegration.

The " Guardian" had an excellent article about " Brexit, the great train robbery, and how democracy was highjacked" which name dropped and implicated many of the techies in Silicon Valley in passing Brexit, the nafarious implications, and how the US is involved, it was lengthy but really mind blowing and informative.

I'll give you a theory on why Trump is cosying up to Russia beyond his admiration for Putin. It has to do with one of the central topics of this discussion and that is China. There is a cohort in Washington, which Trump aligns to, which hopes to bring Russia into the US orbit and further isolate China. I don't think it will work and Russia won't abandon its growing relationship with China but that's the aim.

I blame the assumption and acceptance of greed. The analogy I think of is two kids with two cookies on a plate between them and their first instinct (as members of a cooperative species) is to each take one. Sharing will ensure happiness/survival/good relations, whatever between them. But there’s always some &$$hole who tells one of them, “You could just take both cookies, you know…”
