Van Halen was always a family band, as it was founded by brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen back in 1974. In 2007, a new generation joined the band, as Wolfgang Van Halen took over on bass. Wolfgang is the son of guitarist Eddie Van Halen and actress Valerie Bertinelli, and he was only 16 when he first took over for original bassist Michael Anthony. What was life like for a teenager stepping into his father’s iconic band? From the early awkwardness to being there for his father’s last moments, let’s take a look at the untold truth of Wolfgang Van Halen.

Wolf is a very polite, caring person, who stays positive. All the VH band members have nothing but nice things to say about him. Valerie really raised a nice human being.

I thought that was the sweetest thing when Eddie talking about Wolfie said “he doesn’t smoke. He doesn’t drink.” with a “go figure” face. Then Wolfie watching him the whole time says “you’re not so bad either”. He clearly is such a sensitive young man that he didn’t want his father portraying himself in a bad light compared to his son. THAT little moment really touched me.

It doesn't matter who Eddie was to the world. To Wolfgang Eddie was his dad. He lost his dad. I understand the deep emptiness that he feels. I used to call my dad Pop too.😢.

It's great that Wolfie got to spend all that time playing with his father. His heart is broken but he will have those memories forever and that is so important.

He really does seem to be s straightup guy and I feel his pain. Despite Eddies substances and alcohol problems he put his son first and front and center. It is a sad day, not just for R&R. It is this young mans broken heart that this fan of Eddie Van Halen cares about the most. My heart goes out to him. Hang in there Wolfy. Your Dad was so very proud of you.

Saw Van Halen in 2007 just before I turned 18... Wolfgang was playing bass at that time... I was amazed and fascinated that a teen the same age as me had the chance to play with Van Halen... And he's also Eddie's son! He was rocking a cool Frankenstein bass similar to Eddie's old frankenstrat. Must be really thought for Wolfgang right now... I'm just a fan amongst millions and I'm totally devastated by Eddie's passing... Can't imagine how hard it his for his family 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️

The passing of Eddie makes me cry more now then when I 1st heard the news. The shock of what i had heard put me in some weird emotional delay.I did not want to except thie reality of. I wish I could give you a great big hug Wolfie. I can see how much you loved each other. Icons like Ed should be granted eternal life for the decades of joy he brought to millions and millions of us. A part of my heart feels like it left with him. Absolutely broken! 💔...😭

So sorry for your and the Van Halen families loss Wolfgang. We all lost a legend, an idol, an innovator, and a master. But our loss doesn’t come close to what you and your family has lost. Rest in piece Mr Van Halen and thank you for sharing your soul with us all for so many years.
