This old computer from around 1999 has seen better days, now I will try to revive it with Linux (Perhaps Lubuntu, Xubuntu) and see what happens. In this first part of the story I show the machine and why I decided to wipe Windows and try something newer and open source.

Not that old really.  I have much older machines ('88) that still run fine.
I assume you are using USB mouse and keyboard.  98 didn't support plug n' play until SE and even then it was not great.  You should use a PS/2 mouse and keyboard for the late '90 machines.  They need to be plugged in before you power on the machine.
