Hello please can somebody help me. I’m Ethiopian and I’m getting marriage an Igbo man from nsukka soon By God Grace. But I really want to understand something. He said after marriage if a married woman cheat can get mad. Or die. But if a man cheats nothing won’t happen to him. Is that true??. Or his playing with my head😌

Thank you.

What does the culture say about marrying someone with children from another marriage or out of wedlock? Is it viewed the same as adoption?

Hmmm, there's nothing like 'till death do us part' in the igbo marriage culture, now I understand better, it boils down to the reason why people who are said to have reincarnated are believed to have spiritual spouses.

What about familial adoption, such as adoption of nieces and nephews or other relatives? But thank you for teaching us, our culture is so beautiful in how space is created for everyone and no one is rejected by society just for existing.

If a lady had a child or children in her father's house and later got married, can the child or children belong to the man that later married her?

Does the concept of adultery exist? If a woman is married but gets pregnant by a man who isn’t her husband, are there any implications for her or the child? Is the child deemed an osu or outcast?

You need to explain in English why a child cannot be adopted into a family.

Tobe, thank you for this! As it concerns who owns a child, it is good that you indicated that this tradition you stated is what applies in certain Igbo communities. Unfortunately you are wrong to state that it is what applies in most Igbo communities. The correct state of affairs in that regard is that it is simply what may apply in some Igbo communities but not most. A lady does not make babies in her father's home(seriously abhorred), this is the reason why among other reasons why a child born to an unmarried lady belongs to his biological father. In the communities where such traditions are practiced, you did not indicate that the biological father is usually asked to come and pay the bride price. If the lady does not wish to marry a willing biological father, her family cannot claim the child or attempt to assert that the tradition will apply. It is important that we state this part of the reality. No Igbo family where this tradition applies will stand boldly and publicly on such grounds to defend and attempt to justify the presence of child on such basis. Igbo families always seek to place every child with his or her biological father. We are mostly patrilineal. Socially the maiden will face some sort of ostracization, scorn and riddicule if her family allows such to pass, that will equally be the case with the family. The elders will never allow that to pass especially if the man is keen on paying the bride price.

What happens when an illegitimate son who is legally owned by the mother husband by tradition become a man and want to know and live among his biological father family and also bear his last name but his natural father won’t permit that.

Does the son have the right to without the consent of the mother Husband
