Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love author) once posted a list pointing out the cost of fast food and eating out. She said something like, “You’re not too poor to travel, you’re just too lazy to cook.” It was eye opening!

Some of your tips not only save money but great for overall health. No soda, no processed foods, eating at home, shopping the perimeter of the grocery store.

We are on day 5 of 7 of no spending. The kids were dying the first couple of days asking for McDonald's and Starbucks. Now they are tolerating it.

We're going to have a problem if anyone tries to take my Diet Coke away. 😅 I was randomly in Aldi and they were selling 2L bottles for like $0.46. I was like, bring in the moving truck because we're buying all of this.

I do all these, and I'm able to save 40%-95% of my weekly paycheck (depends on the week :) I'm a 23 year old trying to save up for a house with my fiancé, I absolutely love your content! Thank you!

Going out should be a luxury, a rare fun family outing.

We decorate lightly for Christmas. One quilted wall hanging with a quilted Christmas tree on it. One Santa Claus gnome. One red Christmas stocking & a few pretty Christmas cards we have received in the past. That’s it. This is stuff that has been gifted to us. We didn’t pay for any of it. We don’t decorate for any other holiday. We don’t have any subscriptions to anything. We watch free content on YouTube, Peacock, Vudu, etc. We reverse meal plan. We buy what’s on sale that’s not convenience food & meal plan around that. We’ve found a lot of great sales that aren’t advertised. We follow many of your suggestions on grocery shopping & eat for $75 per month per person or less. And yes we have occasionally bought a $5 or less frozen pizza if we know we’re going to have a very busy day in the upcoming week. We don’t normally keep those around because they’re too easy to reach for. We have done no spend months-usually in February. We got out to eat about 2x a month with extended family & friends. We order water & split an entree or an appetizer depending on how hungry we are. So we get out of the restaurant for about $15 or less. So even though we’d prefer not spending this money as often, these are people we want to see a couple of times a month & with busy work & life schedules this is our opportunity to see them.

We are attempting a no spend year for 2024, I’ll take any tips😂 I rotate streaming services anyway, but after some of the recent price hikes (Disney, Netflix), I decided they are all going away and my kids are going to learn about DVDs

When I was a child, in my small town the bank had a Christmas club. We would make a deposit weekly, then get the money sometime in November. I do this on my own now.

4:04 One additional tip, for those who do grocery pickup: if you have two grocery stores that are reasonably close to each other, price shop them and stagger the pickup times. What I mean is, have a tab open for each grocery store, and search for your grocery list items. Whichever place has it for cheaper, add it to your cart. Then pick up both orders, one right after the other. It takes hardly any extra time, and depending on which stores you're using, you can save a bundle this way.

Alternatively, you may find that one store consistently beats the others when it comes to the specific foods your family buys. That is also useful information, and will save you money, because when you're pressed for time and can only visit one store to buy a few necessities, you'll know to go to that one instead of their competitors.

Meal planning, and cooking in bulk to always have some meals frozen has saved me so much money! Literally watched this video while eating chilli I rooted out of the freezer because I was late home from work and didn't want to cook, but didn't want to spend money on convenience food/take out!

I’ve always been on par with you. We grew up similar, my family was old school immigrants from Europe during WW11. Nothing was taken for granted and never wasted food. I could go a month without spending and I only buy what’s on sale. I live very well and I’m not bound to Big Brother! ❤

I am 59, gray hair and I wear it long (up most of the time), so I'm not spending any money coloring it or getting haircuts. I cut my husband's hair, have for 41 years, and I used to cut our son's hair and our 3 daughters till they moved out.
One day after I cut my husband's hair recently he said 'just think of all the money we saved by me not going elsewhere and you cutting our family's hair'. I started doing it because of time constraints way back when and he just stuck with it because it was so convenient for him. My initial investment was a pair of hair scissors, an inexpensive plastic cover for him to wear and a razor kit and a book I found for $1 at the library. I spent less than $50, 41 years ago!
Maybe you don't want to cut hair, but maybe learn one skill this year that can save money.

Love these tips! Went to the hardware store with my husband. He put chips and other snacks on the cart and when he wasn't looking, i put them back on the shelf. Lol

Don't drink soda, rarely buy processed snacks. I'm contemplating buying a small freezer for the garage do I take more advantage of sales and do more batch cooking and prepping. Live alone but don't want to cook every night or even every other night. My life is about 180:degrees from yours but I still like listening to you.

For Christmas, we stopped doing gifts and we do the white elephant game with friends at a Christmas party (we set a max of $10 😁) and it’s so much fun and inexpensive! We love it.

Sorry, one more observation. My husband and I are retiring in two years. In preparation, we’ve stopped going out to eat (honestly-it’s motivated on several points: not spending a crazy amount of money for what used to be affordable, the insane tipping added to it, and the poor health benefits from eating processed foods). We’ve gone from eating out EVERY Friday (ditch the “I deserve it” mentality & swap that for “I deserve a great retirement”) to going out once every other month or so. Huge savings on our wallets and our health.

I dish & on my phone I only download FREE ones & I find plenty to watch. My husband watches stuff I don't like so to keep the peace I put in my ear phones & listen to what I want. I cook from scratch, don't drink soda, but at 65 I do buy some conventance foods. I've earned that right. But I don't spend much money on things. We never eat out except when we are traveling then of course I can't cook in the car, but that's all.

Where we live pop is actually cheaper than bottled water for the same size. We don't buy pop but that blew my mind. Buying a package of oreos are cheaper than making cookies from scratch (the prices of baking items have went through the roof). Buying bulk now costs about the same as the smaller packages. We still do almost all our cooking from scratch, but "real" food seems to be going up exponentially.
