Early Childhood Interventions. What Are They?

In the next year and a half, we here at Healthcare triage are going to take some deep dives into issues of health policy, especially those that touch on social determinants of health and health equity. The episodes that do so will be a bit longer than usual. They’ll look a little different. They also come to you thanks to the support of the RWJF, which has generously supported their creation. We’re excited about this opportunity to really dig in, and we hope you will be, too.

What works to promote the health of children? What programs exist that provide services to families and children that have been studied rigorously? How well do these programs work? And what are the benefits compared to the cost of the program? And why does this matter? Early childhood interventions are increasing in popularity across the country in liberal and conservative places, but still questions remain about the research behind them.

We’re going to use those questions to frame our discussion of the work, and we’re going to start by broadly talking about the first question. Because it’s hard to discuss whether early childhood programs work before we know what early childhood programs are.

The deep dives sound like a welcome break from the constant stream of bad news emergency reports

Wow. What a an eye opener to early childhood development programs and how much they’ve CHANGED over the years. I’ve always been a big advocate of frequent home visits, intervening as early as developmental challenges arise. Thanks for the great info. Also thanks to the RWJF for sponsoring this! - Nurse Stefan

I went through the first 3 minutes of this video thinking this was about the kind of early intervention for developmentally disabled kids that's such a divisive issue amongst the autistic community... mildly disappointed when I realized it wasn't.

It's good this study happened though. If my taxes aren't going towards actually helping these families and their communities out of poverty, these programs sure as hell better work!

Awesome topic and glad you are covering it. Really appreciate the emphasis on being thoroughly evidence based (and referenced).

I lik ethe redesign, but I'd prefer for the small Icons in the upper right corner of the video to be static, as it can be a bit distracting to have movement in one's peripheral vision when trying to read.

In an earlier episode you said that cold does not make someone sick, the reasons you gave base sick being an infection. What about cold affecting joints in people with arthritis of similar conditions?

The reason these programs have been studied so rigorously is because people who passed sex education want to know why they have to keep paying to help the kids of people who failed sex education.
