First off it's not a thriller or even a mystery. It's a well written soap-ish comment on the foibles of a group of elderly people who act in surprising ways after a gruesome discovery. So it pulls the reader in, then trickles away to a soap opera. And it's surprisingly prissy and judgemental to two main characters. So good start, then a rapid descent.
