It was the biggest challenge to Venezuela's left-wing populists, the Chavistas, in 25 years. The country's notoriously fractured opposition joined forces defied attempts of intimidation and sought to bring down Nicolas Maduro – the man who presided over a crippling economic downfall and one of the world's biggest displacement crises.

The opposition was predicted to win by a double-digit margin and yet the incumbent has been declared the winner. Democratic leaders and organizations from around the world are calling the result into question, as is the opposition. They claim the vote was rigged by an Electoral Council run by Maduro loyalists.

For more on this, we talk to Geoff Ramsey, senior fellow for Venezuela and Colombia at the Atlantic Council in Washington DC.

And we talk to DW correspondent Oscar Schlenker who joins us from Venezuela’s capital city Caracas.

It's not who votes but who counts the votes.

The fact that some people did legitimately vote for this dictator is dumbfounding, despite the hunger, famine, poverty, etc.

Finally the real and historic Venezuelan flag displayed on your reels, not the imposture eight stars devised by the chavjsta tyranny. Anyway a banner without people fighting for its meaning is just a clothe 😢
