Conquistador Francisco Pizarro (ca. 1478–1541) oversaw the Spanish conquest of the Inca civilization beginning in 1532. With just a handful of troops, Pizarro conquered the largest empire in history by using his superior weapons, the Incas' vulnerability due to internal conflict, and the introduction of European illnesses.

Pizarro took control of the Inca city of Cusco, killed Atahualpa, and took advantage of the strong opposition to Inca rule among native South Americans. Then, when the invaders started squabbling among themselves over the glittering riches of a faltering empire, everything went wrong for them. A competing Spanish group assassinated Pizarro in his Lima residence in June 1541.
